Chris just posted an update on his Instagram, he fractured the head of his fibula when he rolled his ankle on a pothole. Poor dude, he can't catch a break
Wow, that sounds awful. I wouldn't be surprised if Derrick retires soon. It's just injury after injury for him and it gets old. Just ask Andrew Luck.

Second of all, save it Malmo he hasn't run a healthy race in years. This freak accident just costed him potentially his contract down the road once the Olympics are over.
The poor dear, you're acting like he's the first runner to be deal cards that he didn't want. I'd gladly trade his untimely injuries for mine.

There is this thing called empathy that is appropriate to express when a person suffers a setback in life. Often its a prosocial behavior rather than going on the offensive and belittling people that attempt to express it. Perhaps you have lost sight of that or maybe never had sight of it at all.

I do have empathy, since I've been in exactly that same position before. It sucks, but in the end you have to count your blessings and move forward. There is no other choice. He has an athletic injury, not a debilitating injury. The reality is that Derrick has lived charmed life, one in which billions of people have never had, or ever will have, that opportunity.

I ran the 5K- the roads are pretty rough, I can see that happening. Too bad.

Certainly a good dose of truth in this observation. We should never expect class from ol' G.M., that's just not who he is.
The only thing I'd add is that over time you make your own luck. Maybe possibly departing the Bowerman group would be best for him, maybe find a second wind with Hansons or NAZ.

Classic Michigan roads!
Who is Nathan Martin?
Andrew Bumbalough is running?

No sh*t. No one is saying that Chris hasn't had a good life filled with opportunity. Obviously, everyone here understands this. It's such a banal point that it doesn't need to be stated explicitly. The "can't catch a break" phrase was clearly referencing the fact that he has had a lot of injuries and now he has another one, which sucks for someone whose paycheck depends on running fast. I honestly cannot for the life of me fathom why you are making such a big deal out of this. Do you go around to hospitals and tell sick people they're lucky not to be dead?
And Andrew Luck, another Stanford student (grad?), retires: worn out mentally, apparently.
He literally spoke at my summer camp in pennsylvania on Monday - it was so great. I hadn't heard of him before and he talked about how he was racing this weekend he has some great stories and was so nice.
go Dathan!
Is Dathan still running professionally? I thought he couldn't get a new contract and had basically hung em up. Not sure why I thought that.

Runs for Hanson’s, and coaches the Gazelle Elite team in GR which recently became the 3rd Hoka Elite group.

Not a fully funded group. It is just gear.
The race was won by Kogo in 46:52 with Dathan in 4th at 47:19. Dathan wasn't crushed. He is a top runner who happened to get beaten by another top runner on the day. When you can run a 10 miler at sub 4:45 pace you are a great runner. Key board heroes who couldn't ride a bike that fast or run even one mile in 4:45 miss the fact that these guys fly on the roads and they make it look easy.
I ran in the same conference as Nathan Martin in NAIA but didn't know him personally. Super classy always really nice. I think he was like 2x national champ in the 10k and marathon in 2013. From the looks of it he's just made steady gains every year and is ready to break out. Wonder if he is running a fall marathon. Would be awesome if he could drop a 2:12 in Chicago and enter the conversation for Olympic team.
Derrick's injury history has been a problem for our distance teams. We lost out essentially on a guy who ran 13:08 early on and then hasn't improved because of repeated injuries. How many sub 13 guys have we had since Rupp five or six years ago? One. Derrick had the makings of a great 10k guy. Good luck to him.

So Dathan is beaten by nearly 200 meters, halfway around a track, and he wasn't crushed? Get out of here with that SJW feel good nonsense lol

No, it isn’t. And the tone of the post I responded to was not one of credit, but to say Dathan was CRUSHED by somebody who beat him by 23 seconds.
Dathan was not crushed. Credit to those who beat him.
Everybody with an IQ above room temperature knew that is what you meant.
