till it's not. The Rolling Stones made a song about what happens to the bones of anorexic runners.

Wow, she looks gorgeous! I didn't realize til now!
Not impressive? Have there ever been any solo 5000m runs faster than this one, aside from possibly the second half of the last two 10000m world records?

Did I deny that it was an impressive run? Certainly not!
I also doubt that there has been a similar solo in history.
But it was not extraordinarily surprising for those who have followed Klosterhalfen's progress in the last few years, especially not after the 8:20 race in Stanford.
I was more surprised by the 8:20 in Stanford. I would have expected more like 8:25-27. But after this it was clear that she could run around or sub 14:30 (as she beat several sub 14:20 runners at Prefontaine) and she is very good at solo runs so the 14:26 was not that surprising, although still impressive, of course.
Shouldn’t her nickname be KoKlo?
Very impressive. She ran very wide at the start and also had to pass whole throngs on the curves. That coulda cost her 1-2 seconds and with the benefit of pacers very likely she’d be challenging sub 14:20.
Her mom looks very fit too. Has some pretty impressive biceps.
Klo means toilet in German...

That's because Hassan paced and made that race. They were all running scared in the second half of that race due to the Semenya factor. Hassan intentionally pushed it hard, but a little bit too hard, and crashed. Kipyegon went with, but slightly stayed off and preserve something for the stretch.
Kipyegon hasn’t run a 5k since 2015. That was Obiri who won the race (who, herself, can also probably run faster than her 14:18 PR).
actually I was referring to the 1500m race in london.. that was my mistake
Two of the fastest women right now over the 1500-5000m distances are horrifically skinnky, by definition severly underwight.
Klosterhalfen: 106 lbs at 5'9" (15.7 BMI)
Hassan: 108 lbs at 5'7" (16.9 BMI)
I was surprised to learn the Diaba, who is has similar speed, is not much heavier, only 115 lbs at 5'6", though looks so much more heavily built.

Skinny for sure. Not horrifically so, however. I raced at 112-115 lbs at 5’8” back in the day (late teens). And I’m male and carried a lot more muscle than Koko. I ate right and didn’t feel undernourished.
As an aside, I find it curious that BMI is calculated the same way for males and females.
She can not train and race like this while being hungry all the time. American body image is so horribly messed up that some people can not even start to comprehend a human can have a body like this without depriving himself of food. So funny. What do you think she grew up eating? Hash browns, corn bread and syrup? Little ol taco bell mom is busy kids eh?
Interesting that she’s sponsored by Nike and not adidas

Yeah, very much so. Germany is everything adidas, because that's where adidas was est.
Strange indeed.

The whole DLV is sponsored by Nike.

Not a single KoKo or Hassan thread is able to exist without people arguing about weight. Can't you just leave these runners alone? They are much fitter than you guys ever will be. Even on each of their Instagram pictures people have to talk about it, it gets boring.
1) They are healthy.
2) BMI is a TERRIBLE measure for being overweight/underweight etc. BMI was made to evaluate the average population in terms of weight. What's the body fat of the average woman? According to WHO, 25-31% (probably higher in the US). Someone with 30% body fat and 15.7 BMI, yes that's underweight, unhealthy and probably needs to be addressed. Many models have this skinny fat look.
Now KoKo, Hassan and many more elite runners are athletes. They have a body fat of 10% or something, are extremely lean and muscular (in the right places!). Their legs are incredibly defined and muscular for someone with a BMI of ~16, you can't compare this to the skinny fat models which are indeed unhealthy and anorexic.
3) They eat a LOT. Like 5-10x more than a skinny fat model. They burn insane amounts of calories due to their high muscle mass, lots of mileage, cross-training, strength training etc.
In short, they are fine. Their weight is just the right amount for them. Even Jager looks like a stick and no one complains about him, just because his BMI is 18.7 and in the ideal range. If you ever saw him in RL, you'd realize male runners are just as thin as females, and I'm not even mentioning here the real sticks which some Africans are.
The Verband used to be sponsored by adidas for decades but the situation changed. Tthey have been sponsored by Nike since 2005 and will be at least until 2028. Of course adidas might sign individual athletes but honestly Nike wants to sign all the big names, even when they don't have the needed equipment. For example all the best German javelin throwers are signed by Nike but when the company couldn't privide good spikes they wore Asics and just painted them completely black so that people couldn't see the logo.

Well it's useful to discuss pro body weight on this forum because many of us here are trying to become faster and are looking to the pros to see what they do to become as fast as possible. It's no different than discussing what workouts the pros do or how many miles per week they run.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
