The one “recent” study that this article is about had a whopping 10 participants. And it’s in conflict with other studies they reference.

What's wrong with essential oils? They smell good right? Does she put them in special places for you? Give you massages with them? Sounds like it could be a really good deal all in all. Why are you so negative?
That’d be fine if she just used them for the smell. But she says I can boost my testosterone with sage oil and that I’ll run faster if I use it every day. She’s got an oil for depression, a couple to prevent the flu, several to treat colds. I could go on and on..
What type does she recommend for anal lube?
Asking for a friend

You seem kind of dense. She wants to raise your testosterone levels? So you can run faster (wink, wink.)
Have fun with her while you still have the opportunity.
I didn’t expect so many replies, but I’m not seeing a lot of useful info. I know essential oils are quackery. I’m applying to med school next year. I don’t feel the need to open my mid to them. I suppose I could pretend. Dr. Drew’s (now old) trophy wife is into crystals and psychics and stuff. They seem to get along okay...

Dude, you spend time on LRC. I find that a lot more disturbing than enjoying essential oils. At most they are harmless. LRC? I think there's no cure for us who have been exposed to it.
Is she also anti-vax? Most essential oil nutbags think they can detox the "heavy metals" from their child after a "forced"vaccination (usually by the sane ex-husband).

Found the pharma/medical establishment shill!
Now find me a peer reviewed study for your anxiety meds that is not corrupted, misrepresented, misguided, completely flawed, limited, biased, or just a complete fabrication..
Talk about pseudoscience..
So because I value the scientific method and the peer review process, I'm a pharma/medical shill?
I don't have anxiety meds, and I'm not taking a position on anxiety meds here. I am only taking a position on the need for peer-reviewed evidence when making medical claims. Evidence-based medicine is one of the greatest ideas humans have ever produced, and it is responsible for the life expectancy we see today.
Essential oils folks make all sorts of wild claims with no real evidence. That is pseudoscience.

I think you know how this works? Give me $300,000,000 and I'll give you 145 peer reviewed articles promoting the numerous benefits of essential oils in a few months.
Scientific method works only when it is not compromised. Not sure how frequent that is nowadays.
Did you mention life expectancy? Life expectancy sucks right now. We should be living to 140 in these modern times, but we're stuck at 70 or so. Worse yet, most are living their last 10,20,30 years in absolute misery hooked on permanent medications, and look like crap. Some great evidence-based medicine society we have.
I think we have so little in common that there's not much point in having a discussion.

You are 100% right about that.

Essential oils are almost a perfect case study for what pseudoscience is...
No they are not. Only when claims are made above and beyond what they are proven to do is pseudoscience.

She’s had all the routine stuff. I haven’t asked about the flu and I figure if you have to skip one, that’s probably it.

I just started hanging out with this girl who must spend thousands of dollars a year on essential oils. She has one for everything. She otherwise seems pretty normal except (aside from a required physical before starting colleg) hasn’t been to a doctor in seven or eight years. I’m not sure how long I can go without saying something that might offend her. Any tips for keeping my mouth shut? Or should I risk it and try some sort of intervention?
You haven't lived until you've gotten a lavender oil hand job.

You utter dolt. 70% of soybeans go directly to animal feed. The biggest chunk of the rest goes to oil. Very small percentages go to things like biodiesel and foods for direct human consumption. The Ag industry wants you to eat meat, not soy.
Why do people love High Fructose Corn Syrup?
Sugar is the way to go. It should be obvious to everyone.
