it may be more useful to set incremental goals en route to stellar times (e.g. sub 1:50).
Last year i ran 2:11.7 in the 8. It was my PR in October. Then I got injured, took some time off. Then i trained consistently for about 5 months and ran 2:05.92 this May. My stretch goal was to run 2 flat this outdoor season. My realistic goal was sub 2:06. Even though 2:05 high is not exactly the bees knees, it was an improvement and a stepping stone on my more ambitious goals (Sub 2 and ultimately even lower!).
Things that you can improve upon which take time to improve
- agility
- power
-strength
- racing tactics
- aerobic base
- psychology
- technique (ideally from a sprint coach to learn proper form / top end speed generation)
Godspeed! Hope you start chipping away at your goals.
