Any runner could make it out of most remote locations without having to resort to much survivalism at all. Take away the helicopter and crew vehicles and Bear is still probably at most 100k away from modern amenities somewhere. Any one of us could make it that far in at worst two or three days without dropping from hunger, as long as there's adequate water.
Which direction to go? Find a river. If you're in a forest, you're likely in high ground and can find one merely by looking around or walking sideways until you find a runoff channel and following it down. Nearly every river in the world is inhabited in its valley portions. The oldest maps of uncharted land generally start with rivers, because that's how the first explorers were able to travel through them. You can even build a raft and float to civilization if you are lazy.
