This baffles me. I was a slightly worse runner in college (just over 30:00 in 10k) and have run 1:06 on the roads for half, 2:23 for marathon, while working FT and getting a graduate degree. Why does he need a van? Running - especially at the sub-elite level - is not all that time intensive.

I'm with you. As someone who ran similar times to this guy in college. I've qualified to trials twice working FT. You have the difficulty of working FT but the benefit of living comfortably far offsets that for me. Plus when I'm done running I won't have set my career back. It's not easy to train for the marathon and work full time but there are a number of guys who do it and qualify for the trials. Not hundreds but a decent number.

Agreed but hey, he's enjoying the ride. After 2020 he should re-evaluate and if wants to go for 2024 and if so should ditch van and work 30-40 hour week and train as best he can.

I know a guy who ran 28:40 working 9x 5 so it can be done if you don't waste time commuting or working overtime.

After 2024 he can re-evaluate again.

That 4 year cycle is still the way to commit and then plan next cycle.

Dude probably cruises around some and lives at his parents' house.

I ran faster than this guy while working full-time, raising kids, and at 10+ years older. Snooze.

I use to be critical of guys like this but as I get older I realize why should I care. If he likes it and is enjoying himself, good for him. I Wish him all the luck in the world.

The only thing is I see quite a few guys doing this but not so many women.

I've been retired for the past four years, My big boy work experience was never as much fun as living in a van seemed like it would be.

This guy has no chance. If he is serious about making the OTs, he should live in a cave at 8000' and go full paleo eating berries and persistence-hunt bugs and cougars.
