Who coaches the freshman?
Who coaches the freshman?
I plan to soon. Got to move on to the next individual talent.

Nico Young’s coach only coaches Nico. This is a huge help for Nico as he gets full attention on every aspect of his routine and runs.
Lets also talk about his freshman teammate running 4:17 to break the 1600 record!!
He coaches the entire team, but only pays attention to 2 girls and 6 boys. He takes those same kids to the big meets, while the rest of the team has to do mop up duty at their league meets. None of the other kids get to go to any invitationals.
His approach seems to be trying to create a college or post collegiate team experience for the talented kids. Not saying it's right or wrong, he just doesn't seem to approach coaching a high school team the same way as the vast majority of coaches do.
People will try to compare him to Doug Soles at Great Oak, but the difference is Great Oak is a big team, where all kids get a chance to compete and have the same opportunity for attention. That is why they have such amazing depth and Newbury Park is on the brink of collapse with one injury for XC.
Culpepper kind of disappointing in this one. Would've expected in the 8:50s given his cross season and 4:09 indoor mile.
Nico and Cole looked unreal Saturday night. And lets not forget the other 12 boys under 9min in the same race. They only being juniors is going to make a very fast fall XC season. This can be a very cool rivalry for HS track/XC.
Newbury Park has the best 2-miler in the country (one of 10 best all-time) plus the best 9th grade miler in the USA?
How is that possible? 20,000 high schools in USA, that's just too big of a coincidence. What the hell is happening over there?
Can't believe the star og The suite life og Zack and Cody run can that fast. What are his brothers Prs?

Well, obviously they are working very hard and the training must be solid. However, another component may be the recruiting. Both Nico Young and Colin Sahlman are from another school district and transferred to Newbury Park. They have 6 boys on that team that ran under 5:00 for 1600 (and one was very close) as middle schoolers. Not just sneaking under, but 4:41, 4:48, 5:51 kind of fast. All of their top 6 boys were absolute studs in middle school.
The entire Ventura county knows that Colin Sahlman was recruited against CIF rules, yet nobody will report it because they want to avoid the conflict.

Funny you mention that. He has a brother that ran 4:52 for 1600 as an 8th grader so far this track season. He'll be running there next year, along with Nico Young's twin brothers who have run 4:52 and 4:56.

too bad they don't compete in D1 because Craig Dunn would report them in a heartbeat, even if they were within the rules

I think they are D1 this coming year. They are in track anyway.
Nico and Cole seem well matched and job well done by both this boys! I would like to see them head to head in the mile.

Starting to make sense now.
Remember Austin Tamango, the CA kid that as a HS freshman ran 4:11
Best of luck to all who are coached by this guy.
Did you see the last 100m of that race. That is what makes track meets like Arcadia such a special meet to watch.
Also that Pole Vault record was happening as the seeded 3200m was taking place.
Such a cool event.
Bummer that these guys couldn't get through another 18m. That's just 60 feet! Then they could run the 2 mile, an event the WR for which is held by the legendary Komen. I wonder if this kid is interested in that distance. I gotta think if I could crank out a mean 90m that I'd target the 100 and train like mad for it. Well, a summer of long runs won't hurt....
I think he ran 14:30 last weekend. He may be able to make a mid major XC squad. He got overchurned too early in his career. Could have been a 3:35 1500 guy but now is a 3:50 guy.
I will look into it! I race the 3200m in SoCal and race against Nico MF Young often.
Nico is such a stud and so is Cole. I just with the Arcadia Mile was just as exciting .

Guessing that most have gone on to go some good things because they were primarily seniors and some juniors. The ones that I worry about are the freshmen in the field running 9 flat. Those kids don't need to be traveling the country at 14 years old chasing national class times.
What would Jakob do?
