Any marathon where the course record is 2:06 is D-1 equivalent.

The sub elites love Sketchers since they get free crap from them. Only problem is that their stuff is all crap. I’d get injured in 2 secs if I trained in that crap. My PT even told me their stuff is crap. I’d race in it if I were paid to tho but then use a different brand for all
My training
This race blows. Logistically a nightmare. But always funny to watch because after the first 4-5 Kenyans finish, you have to wait about 20 minutes until the next runner finishes. It’s a joke.
Ridelled with a bad history from the owner stealing from it, being charged with tax evasion, the whole Peter Fonseca incident, McCourt (maybe the most hated man in LA) buying it, the worst TV coverage (it’s unwatchable)...
He should have called it a "minor-league 'thon".
"Race" is a false concept, invented by colonialists to secure and maintian their power over subjugated peoples.

I wouldn't say it's minor league. I'd say it's not the major leagues.
Baseball isn't the perfect analogy for running.
But I had no idea the LA Marathon was this weekend until now.
The pro race is a minor league race. The winning time for the men has been over 2:10 for 5 straight years. The winning time for the women has been over 2:30s. That's minor league.
Since it's March and people want to use basketball analogies (non-US visitors, the college basketball championship tournaments are going on now and it's called mid-major), I guess mid-major is ok as that means normally only the winner could even hope to be a player (few at large bids for mid majors) and there are like 20-30 others that are better.
Regardless, you get my drift. When the LA Times guy emailed saying he wanted my take on the race, the reality is I had to do research on LA as it's not something we really even pay attention to.

Yup. Totally in the loop
rojo just upset that someone named Weldon wins it
In 2018 5 men ran faster than 2:20. Prize money went 5-deep. There's a purse of $100k so that's pretty good. 2:40 was 20th place, so that's not bad.
It used to be stronger. It had years when it was weaker. It's gone up and down and the course changed dramatically a few years ago. In 2006, 15 guys sub 2:20 and almost 50 guys ran sub-2:40, so that's almost a factor of 3 in depth at the front.

Have you been to a minor league baseball game? Those guys get paid too (well, not a lot, but taking the entire payroll into account, it might be considered "pretty good") , and are pretty dang excellent at baseball!
Stick to your guns bro! I agree, it has become a minor league race, almost irrelevant. It had its glory days and it had potential, but those are long gone. What happens is people with thin skin (among them the flakes, the political correct police poster of LRC) can't stomach it and have to make some noise. It is what it is: An irrelevant minor league race.
Why has LA become a 2nd/3rd Tier competitive marathon? The city?, the race organization? bad luck?
Every city wants to believe their marathon is the next big thing. Usually the home fans are optimistically delusional.

All are recognizable names.
Talking about the Johnson bros. does not make them relevant.
Definitely not complimentary.
LOL, now we have old women in their 80s posting on here?! You represent the only demographic that was missing - until now!

I sat in the elite hospitality suite on the 45th floor of the Sheraton last week at the NYC Half and watched a half dozen athletes, coaches, and agents talk about how out of the loop the Johnson Bros have become.
They have been out of the game for over a decade and have lost their connections in the sport.
Half dozen is 6, so 6 people had this conversation. Meanwhile a 7th watched them carefully.
That’s not wrong. If it’s not a world marathon major...
