Pretty much deserves whatever the court throws at him.
Would you write the same sob story if he ran over someone on the way home instead?

You seem to have a lot of juicy details on to what happened a guy that was drunk, saw "electrical wires hanging down on the road and that's all he remembers".
You know, speaking in the third person is not a good idea at your age, neither is getting behind the wheel drunk with a prior. I wish YOU luck and that YOU get a lenient judge, otherwise, depending on the jurisdiction, YOU are screwed.
OP, you really are not being honest are you? If you are being honest, you have a serious problem. I am not talking about drinking. Have you been diagnosed? Do you really believe that you had a friend who got arrested for D.U.I? You are not asking for legal advice as you stated. You want life advice. If you have $5000 or $5000 available on your credit card, spend the money and get a solid attorney. You cannot take a legal argument you read on letsrun and state that in court. Get a good attorney. You need a clinical psychologist as much as you need an attorney.
If it was less than a mile, why didn't he just pull the car to the side of the road and walk home? Then wake up in the morning sober and walk back and get the car.
He'll probably qualify for a public defender. They'll have to investigate any admissions he may have offered, and whether that machine really was not working, etc., etc.. How the hell does he know the machine wasn't working properly?
He needs this to be the imputes to turn things around. You don't ever get behind the wheel after four beers. No excuse. Ever. Even if they're only cheap American lagers. Especially if you've got a prior.
I'm calling BS that he only had four cheap beers on Saint Patrick's day with a recorded BAC of .17, *but of course the two machines used to test him weren't working properly*
