That was not the point. She has nothing to prove by beating her legs up more just to pass a bunch of guys who do not affect her in any way. Plus her "training run" after was something like an 8-mile tempo.

She isn't going to be able lollygag early and come home in a quality race. She needs to get used to a harder pace. She can play around in later run.
The second run for the day was on her own or with friends. Racers need to race. It feels different running a race, than it does running hard with nothing at the end.
If you want to be average, do average things. No female athlete is without a great pace opportunity. There's always plenty of guys running fast enough for them to key off.
