Shorter is a more appropriate namesake. You are welcome. I assume that is the answer you were looking for.
The pre classic should leave the diamond league at this point. You can’t have a meet with no 5k that’s dedicated to a guy that ran the 5k. Makes no sense, just like the iaaf.

Pre also ran the 3000m. So renaming it because he ran the 5000m of which no longer is a DL event doesn't make sense. The only valid argument is him being DUI when he died. If Oregon hosts the meet it's their choice.
Go Pre!
Never set foot in Oregon until I was 48. Went to HS in CO, CA, and NJ. College in MA and VA. Also lived in MD, WashDC, NY, WY, Germany, and Belgium. Of course I remember Prefontaine from the '70's--he was one month younger than me, but after he died, I don't think I ever heard anyone ever mention his name til I moved to Eugene in 1999. My God, it's like he never died. All kinds of Pre stories and anecdotes. My UPS driver (North Bend) ran against him in HS and his wife dated Pre in HS. A nurse at MW hospital was friends with his older sister, and remembered this little pesty little kid bugging the hell out of them. His other sister was a patient at the PT clinic I worked at. A neighbor--who didn't know him-- recalls he was out jogging one day, and Pre came up and ran with him for a couple miles. The stories go on and on. Yea, the U of O students probably don't care about T&F, but your mistaken when you say Eugene doesn't.

Re-naming the Pre Classic? Will not happen in your lifetime. You have obviously never spent any time in Eugene.
You have obviously never ventured any significant distance away from Hayward Field if you think Eugene or even UO students give a snot about track. They have not even heard of the Prefontaine Classic.
If, only if, and when Nike wants it renamed, it gets renamed. That's who cares.
Its probably best the meet change from Prefontaine anyway. The last several years, 5k mens runners just sit and kick the last 600 meters. Pre was probably rolling in grave. Gone are days when mens 5k are run from the gun for fast times.
Now that he’s off the bike and started running, they should call it the Lance Armstrong Classic.
Edward Cheserek Classic? I mean he went to UofO and he is the NCAA goat no doubt.
The Alberto Salazar Classic.
Duh.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
