We're going to see the same thing happen at the 2020 Trials where we get articles months later about Nike athletes making the top-3 wearing shoes that aren't available to the public or maybe even other Nike sponsored athletes.
what's interesting is that at the 2016 trials, only Nike pros (1st Cragg and 3rd Flanagan) had the very very early version of the vaporflys, I don't believe Kara Goucher had access to them and she had to settle for fourth (but also Desi taking 2nd in regular shoes which says something)
in 2020 however the playing field might be a little more level, while not 4-5% shoes, at least Brooks and Hoka athletes will have maybe 2-3% shoes
but I hope asics gets something to Sara Hall and also Molly Huddle is going to have to accept the prototypes from Saucony (that Jared Ward used) if it's going to be remotely fair
just imagine what the age-graded tables are going to look like for the 2020 update compared to 2015 and 2010, all the masters runners are suddenly going to be 2-4% slower unless they adopt carbon springs
and what is going to happen to BQ and OTQ times after 2020
the longer USATF waits to do something, the harder and weirder it's going to get
