See 720 ILCS 5/31-4.
The offense is a Class 4 felony for which the punishment can be 1-3 years prison (Department of Corrections). The fine can be up to $25,000. The judge has the option of sentencing the defendant to probation instead.
It's actually unclear whether he gave false information. Likely, he was attacked (if as a hoax) by the Nigerians. More likely he can be assessed with conspiracy (to defraud?) or something. But no one's going to jail of/c, and $25K is very cheap for the publicity he got. Being a victim is a wealthy trade nowadays.
Last week, a central Illinois man was sentenced to three years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to fabricating an Amber alert.
On December 15, Mitchell Dutz, 18, told police that three black men stole his car with a 13-month-old infant inside. Dutz used a social media photo of a child he did not know to claim that there was a kidnapping. But police rescinded the Amber alert after it became clear that it was a hoax.
https://www.pjstar.com/news/20190204/farmington-amber-alert-faker-mitchell-dutz-pleads-guilty-sentenced-to-prison100% false. The article specifically says he got the 3 yrs for burglary, and they dropped the obstruction of justice charges.
Tough break for Jussie.
Being a victim of a hate crime would have a great break for his aspiring career.
Too bad it didn't turn out as planned.
Where is Jesseriley? Are you still on Jussie's team?

His main error was in (wait for it...) casting selections....
If he had chosen two *actual* white racist homophobic guys rather than his Nigerian non-racist non-homophobic friends, it likely would have worked.
Like they say, there's too much of a patronage and nepotism network in Hollywood, and he paid for it.

Exactly!
It's of course that Jussie planned this hoax all along. But not for publicity.
But he did it to ensure that our country would have a needed discussion about #hate and anti-gay anti-black.
----> Look who you now see trying to run from that conversation......
+1 for Jussie. Risking prison is not easy, but hopefully this will lead to us overcome the hate that infests USA since late 2016. We can all gather in the movement together for continue the fight.
When you see the unhinged right wing haters gleefully and rushing to pounce on this story (only) now - having ignored it when it was about anti-black anti-gay M-A-G-A White Supremacists and their irretrievable Hate -, it just goes to show you how much overdue this necessary national conversation really is. Unfortunately, with hater-in-chief cheeto-brain occupying the WH, this won't get done. How different if Obama were still there. We need Kamala.
Looks like the Media made another error: It was Crafty Beaver (not Ace Hardware) that sold the rope.

It was a reasonably well-planned #HoaxAttack for a first-timer.
Hopefully he'll get more details right the next time.
The whole episode shows how Dems / MSM / apparatus are lemmings, and Smollet played them all along.
But they won't learn of course.
#Jussie speaks to ABC again:
This story has nothing to do with right wingers, Kamala Harris, Trump or any other narrative. Smollett’s action are the story - you know - facts - those pesky things. Heck, CNN gave Smollett non stop coverage, taking Smollet’s story as the perfect victim narrative. They and other media outlets did not ignore him - they took his claims quite seriously, even after legitimate doubts arose. And CNN, hardly a right wing organization, is pouncing, as you say, on the latest news because to not do so would shred their credibility (CNN reported on the latest news responsibly today, not pouncing as you say but rather responsibly reporting what they knew and making clear Smollett’s likely fate). The UVa hoax occurred under the Obama Adminstration - indeed - a UVA grad working in the Obama White House on sexual harassment issues tipped Erdely about Jackie. But neither Obama nor right wingers were responsible for the hoax - a troubled woman knowing as Jackie and a progressive and naive reporter bound to prove a narrative (with an employer all too willing to support her) and having abandoned any sense of healthy skepticism caused the problem.
The core of this story remains a mystery. Even if Smollet is histronically worked up over a Trump (as many seem to be), he is an intelligent guy, and from his performance on ABC the other day (an event his defense attorney will regret), a very talented actor. I have friends who live in his neighborhood - modern high rises abound and one probably could not name a place in the Midwest with more security cameras. Throw into the mix that Chicago (not Streeterville necessarily) is suffering from awful crime in certain neighborhoods, degrading the reputation of the city and causing population loss, all with a heavy racial overtone to it, and Smollett had to know his perfect victim story would be investigated to high holy heck. Again, this guy is articulate and intelligent- no too dumb to know defenses here. The challenge is, of course, is that there is racism out there, and Smollett’s actions make it harder for people with legitimate claims to have them heard properly. Isn’t that the byline?
And to those who say withhold judgment, well, I was doing so, but when CNN throws him under the bus, Smollett is in deep trouble.
This tweet is so stupid. How else is Smollet going to get a Subway gig?

Clearly, he (like many since 2015 and the Trump era) misjudged the supposed "power" of MSM (Robin Roberts here), and to the detriment of Twitter sleuths. Heck, even LRC cracked a couple of cases recently (Abu Dhabi short distance and Bolt 4.22). You don't have to be a 4chan pro to know that media/Hollywood complex don't necessarily control the narrative anymore. (Especially the week after #Covington flamed out).
And with the hyper-amped #BlameGame against M-A-G-A people put forth by every 2020 Dem hopeful just naming their run, this story couldn't just "disappear" like other hoaxes. You have to be feeling the pulse of how the nation is and how things will play out. That's why the CIA is so good at hoax psy-ops, they know the ultimate scoreboard (though even they miscalculated in the Trump era, with Charlottesville)
Undubitably, the notions of dividers who daily teardown our country with their spew in the aftermath is the worst, and just goes to PROVE the point Jussie was making in the first place? It's there whole culture, they are blind to it. #NotWoke
Maybe he'll put forth an "If I Did It" hypothetical reason for why he might have done this.
Then we can all forgive him and move on.

Shame on Jussie Smollett for putting American hoax attackers out of business by hiring Nigerians to do it.
Actually they are USA citizens, it seems. Otherwise, I'd think the whole reason for this escapade is some hare-brained scheme to avoid Trump from deporting them, like with 21 Savage (rapper).

Did they have to buy the hats themselves?
Does this include stunt pay, and maybe some extra for the cold weather (polar vortex)?
