I was thinking about finish tape when I saw a pic of a non-binary runner (jacob caswell) going through one at a road race in NY. I thought, how did they know he was the first nb runner? Did they use diff color bibs? But also, finishing tape can help a female know she wins in smaller races. One time I shockingly won a small local charity 5k, in which there was a 10K that looped the 5k course twice (there were 3-4 women ahead of me, but they were doing the 10k), and I wasn't sure when I crossed the finish line that I had won. Thank goodness for just a couple people in that final stretch who said "first place female!" or something like that. I could have gone home clueless, except I may have stuck around to see if I won an age group medal. A finishing tape would have made it obvious to me. But it also would have helped if someone organizing it came up to me at the end and said "congrats, you were the first female finisher" but no one did that. Everyone knew who the first guy was and were congratulating him. It was kind of a weird day now that I look back on it.
