I am from Atlanta area, and I don't even like to be near there anymore. Birmingham AL is alright. The north Georgia mtns. are nice. It is absurdly hot and humid in the south, visit in the summer and imagine yourself living there before you commit. That being said, I don't think I could move back south due to the weather. Chattanooga, Athens GA, Huntsville Alabama, Nashville, are all ok. Be sure to consider proximity to decent health care.
You mean like Canada?
Greenville, SC and Chattanooga, TN would be at the top of my list.
Having lived in the former, I’ll give you my pitch. It has impressive dining for its size, hosts both a minor league baseball and hockey team, and it has a booming economy. Rent is not high and housing prices are affordable. I went back and visited for the holidays, and there were many new breweries, restaurants, coffee shops, and more. There is also a fairly large music venue that holds maybe like 20k or so. Besides that, there are a few other small venues.
The DT area does hold some fun events throughout the year. Fall for Greenville, Greek Festival, Artisphere come to mind. The downtown area is actually quite enchanting, with liberty bridge and Falls Park often busy.
The running experience is fairly positive. Paris Mountain, Furman University, and the Swamp Rabbit trail are all solid spots. Asheville is less than a hour away as well.
Yes, it is miserably hot and humid during the summer. However, it is definitely worth a visit to see if you like it. As someone mentioned earlier, go when it is most hot.
...Nashville. It's like Portland but in the south and with admittedly fewer easily accessible running trails. Great food. Beautiful people. Museums. Sports (NFL, NHL, MLS). Good running scene on the eastside (and some good running paths). A lot of educated people. Would say as much brain infill as brain drain.
