Today's pitchers are better.
You'd think today's muscle bound players could swing a big bat and hit 500 foot shots, most can't even do it in a home run derby competition orbatting practice.
Ruth could do what he did, winding up with that swing, because the pitchers of his time didn't throw very hard. Again, the extremes on either end stick out to us which is why the statistics of eras gone by are so out of whack to the high end in terms of BA and OBP. He'd struggle vs HS pitchers attempting to do so today. Of course he'd make adjustments but he'd be a much lesser player in todays world.
In terms of BA there's also the element defensively of much poorer equipment and slower players which allow for many more hits in a relative sense over what we see today. We can also factor in scouting which, with todays film availability makes defense a much more important element of the game.
The thought that the best 3 players, hitter, pitchers in the history of the game would have played as long as a century ago is preposterous.
