Broe, Hall, and Dobson couldn't even rabbit Bekele through a 5K of one of his 10K's. Although they are getting close to being rabbit material ....

Dobson and Hall are on their way to replacing "America's hopes": Torres and Ritz
i think torres needs to realize that 5K is not where he will make any sort of impact. he's obviously capable of running 27:45 and under so i have no idea why he keeps pounding his head against the wall in the 5K. and, long-term, he's clearly a marathoner. he should just quit delaying the process.
Torres is just not that great. That 13:25 might be a PR for him though. Teg also PR'd in a fine 13:25..
I agree and Ritz has to be kicking himself for missing this meet. Bro, Dobson and Hall are all on another level right now. Ritz may run faster in europe but it won't be in a championship meet. These guys produced when it counted and Ritz was again on the shelf during the important racing season.

is Broe in sub 13 shape?
No.

Damn straight. Wetmore wasn't really in favor of Ritz at 10K either. He is a 5K coach and for some unknown reason doesn't like his "star runners" to go above 5K. Ritz at least knew where his future lay. Torres is still in denial. Think you'll see Vaughn run a 10K during his collegiate career? Nope.
Jorge!!!! Move to Hudson and move to 10K!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you kidding??!
i think one of the best things about this race was that there is no question that the three best athletes made the team. not the three best kickers, not the three luckiest, etc. but the best. they took the race by the horns, dared people to go with them, and flat out crushed the field. broe has always raced like that but it's great to see a couple more guys ready to do that. this is the sort of racing that will get american distance running back where it belongs. all three are capable of sub 13:10 over the next few months. it's amazing to see what broe can do when he's healthy. i never saw him as much more than a 13:07ish guy but it wouldn't suprise me now to see him approach 13:00.
and jorge has run 13:24. jorge is "that great." however, he's basically wasting his time at 5K. anyone who watched his ncaa win a few years ago (hey, i think that was a 10K race) or any other race he's run knows that jorge is a long distance runner. i understood when he started out at 5K a couple years ago. but, buddy, it's time to move up to 10K. he'd be going to helsinki if he had.

He's a graduate student at William and Mary. Four time All-American. Just got seventh at NCAA outdoors in the 5000. He's always been good...not quite 13:25 good, but good.
i see he was unattached. does he have a deal yet? if not, i think this race just got him one. good job, ed.

Three Americans under 13:20? I wonder when this was last done in an all American race.
1982, about 5 or 6 did it at the Prefontaine Meet.

those 5k times are impressive how?
Oh, you mean for an all American championship race..gotcha!
Brian Sell is right, if you want to know what a bunch of 18 min 5k runners think about track come to Letsrun.

It will be on tv soon! and Hall is the man!!! He will beat them both at Helsinki
Will they show the full 5k on tv? Will it be shown at all?
Torres and Ritzenhein don't have a future at 5k&10k, unlike Ryan Hall for example they don't have the mechanics/speed to run 13:00 and this is where real world-class 5k running starts and without the right 5k-ability you have no chance in the 10k either but with a 10k Pr in the low 27:20s(they are definietly capable of that) you can become a monster-marathoner(sub 2:07).I think the current situation is ideal for developing talent, it's so competitive that it's not enough to be "good" to make the team.
When was the last time we had this many Americans with the potential (i know, it's only potential) to run under 13:20?
Broe, Hall, Dobson, Ritz, Lagat, Torres, Goucher, Webb, Teg...?
agreed. i believe the marathon has always been the long-term plan for both. i dunno about 2:07 for jorge but he's probably a 2:10 guy at least. ritz, who knows. 2:07 might be a possibility if he stays healthy but he has yet to prove that he can do so.
to the guy knocking these performances earlier in the thread.
THESE TIMES ARE IMPRESSIVE FOR ANY NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP........INCLUDING KENYA/ETHIOPIA
You only see times faster than these in the European Grand Prix meets and at major championships, even the Africans don't run that fast at their National Champs.
Sub 13:00 may be pushing it for this year for Broe, but I see a 13:05 or so for Broe this summer, perhaps 13:10 for the other two. The best thing about it is that they should be able to get into the fast European races without any problem now. I also see Torres and Ritz running some fast times....13:15 for Torress and 13:10 for Ritz
Should be a great year for USA distance running. We could have ten sun 13:20 guys by the end of the year
Man, it was exciting just to read the recap! Nice job with that wejo and thanks rojo for the real time updates.
Sure hope they show the 5K on the TV show, but I wouldn't count on anything more than a 2 minute summary...
I said back in '01 that Hall would end up better than Ritz at 5k because he has good leg speed and Ritz has none.
Amen brother. Somebody has got to tell Torres, "wake up man, 5K ain't your event. You might run a 13:15 someday, but you're best track event is the 10K. Stop wasting your time and move up NOW"
Wow, what a bunch of ignorant jag-offs. On the basis of one race some of you have determined that Broe can dip under 13min., Hall and Dobson have what it takes to challenge the boys over in Europe, and Ritz and Torres (and anyone less talented than them even though 9 guys went under 13:30 in this race)are done and need to move up. There's a lot of shit on these boards, but this load is pathetic. Last nights race was incredible for American t&f, why can't that be good enough?
