I think by finalist he means final round - aka getting out of regionals. So each member of a relay counts as 1 probably plus an alternate, and he's probably counting every time Olivia Baker qualified instead of counting her as one athlete. Interesting way to stretch the facts. One of these days AD's are going to catch on to this deceit.
I’m tired of both coaches not knowing boundaries and athletes being too sensitive. How long before everybody learns what’s okay on both sides and we all move on.
But he didn’t coach baker did he? She was 800m.
Sorry to hear about your teammate.
I don't think you'll find another coach in the country, that knows Jenkins and will agree with your statement about your teammate's suicide over the pressure placed on him from Jenkins.
There's far more to this story than you can explain and we will ever understand. Still, this is yet another prime example of how soft, entitled, coddled, torn, alone, separated today's student athletes have become in comparison to a decade or two or three ago.
To place blame on Jenkins is highly unreasonable and for arguments sake, if your friend couldn't handle the pressure of the team I can guarantee life does not get any easier after college.
Parents and recruits take note; all your practice with drills and/or countless hours of studying mean nothing if you cannot handle adversity. It's only getting harder. Good luck.
This is a spot on assessment, unfortunately. If kids can’t learn how to deal with adversity early on in HS, they will struggle in college. I would think coaches would start asking more questions of recruits about what kind of adversity they have faced and overcome to get a better sense of preparedness for the next level, too.

no clue but he is claiming credit for her success even though she got slower while Gabe was at stanford.

Olivia Baker dropped 3 seconds in 2016 the first year Gabe worked with her, stalled the next year, then dropped another second in her senior year. It wasn't all perfect, she may not have completely filled her potential during that time but she improved substantially in the 800m. Her 400m PR is still from HS, but 4 seconds of improvement in the 800m is plenty.

It’s a real issue when the salary is a hard 75k for the assistants. That’s not much for Palo Alto.
That would be plenty of money for an assistant coach. If you were dumb enough to pay 3k for rent each month out there you'd still have just about half of your money left over. You'd only have a problem if you wanted to buy a house, but as an assistant why would you want to buy a house out there when you're obviously hoping to move up in the coaching world? Huge pain in the ass. It's only expensive if you feel the need to have multiple children and blow money everywhere.
Most of the people these posters think are good enough to coach Stanford's distance squad have families. 75k is no where close enough to survive for a family of 3 on just one income. That's why JJ will be coaching the distances & he'll likely have an emotional support female to assist and help recruit and maybe an emotional support male in the same role. And it doesnt matter what you all think of JJ's distance coaching or program management skills. The kids that go to Stanford do not care who the coach is.

I agree with your post for the most part. I do believe you are on the right path on the model of JJ being the guy with just some support pieces around him for distance group. I can’t say that the kids not caring about who those pieces are is completely accurate.
And it doesnt matter what you all think of JJ's distance coaching or program management skills. The kids that go to Stanford do not care who the coach is.
It may not matter as much to the kids that are already at Stanford and don't want to transfer, but it will DEFINITELY have an impact on who will choose to go there in the future. If Stanford were to drop the XC program completely you would not see everyone on the roster stay so it is not a 100% academic decision for everyone on the roster.
Some recruits will go elsewhere. I know of at least one top 10-20 XC athlete from this year's high school class who has already said they are not considering Stanford because of JJ.
Bottom line: Gabe is a good coach who gets the human relations side of life. The overwhelming majority of high achieving coaches at any level share those traits. That we should all get to the levels of accomplishment we desire by excelling at emotional intelligence.. Work hard, treat other people well and do your job. Welcome back to Boston, Gabe!
