Expect a surprise hire at Stanford if Mike Smith declines.

Who be dat?
I'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with anyone here...but you do realize she's also an Assistant Athletic Director at Stanford (don't believe me, check their staff title list
https://gostanford.com/coaches.aspx?roster=1688) & probably makes more than all the assistants already right? Yeah...it's not happening, but it's also not as crazy sounding as the average DoOps going from that position to Director...
Bad idea, you are either crazy or in cahoots with her. Please stop selling you wears here.

Honestly, this is probably a hot take, but being a coach in the division one level on the west coast, this is what Stanford should do in my opinion if they want to have success......
Hire Jessica Riden as the the director of the program..
Come on! Director at Stanford is the very definition of "the big leagues", and it will take someone with incredible charisma and coaching ability to be successful. This is a job that's way beyond simply managing the operations of the team; they have to schmooze with alums/donors, recruit from a small subsection of the nation's top prospects, deal with intense pressure from University admin, represent an incredibly prestigious institution in national and international media, etc.
Jess is solid, but she's not even close to ready for all that.

Brooks Johnson - we've been saying it all along. He's the man with the plan. He'll bring in PattySue and Gabe - boom it's over!
From NCC to SU once a cardinal always a cardinal
Sorry, not Chas Davis. Also, I only know Jess from communicating with her at meets. We aren't friends. I'm not surprised this idea isn't resonating with a lot of people. Lots of narrow minds out there.

What about Wendell?
When they say “everyone has that one weird friend who doesn’t get it or has a huge blond spot” and you’re the one who can’t think of who it is. It’s because you’re the one with a narrow mind.

Has anybody considered a current assistant coach at Stanford getting the head job? Eskind has seen quite a bit of success there and is great at recruiting too. If the AD can't secure any big names, why wouldn't they look into the program they already have. Thoughts?

Eskind isn't a distance coach. Do people really think they'd hire a non-distance head coach? He definitely has some charisma and could most likely get some good people to work under him though - if he could get an assisstant coach from another top XC school, Stanford would be fine. Maybe Nelson from Colorado? or Hartke from Boise?

It's possible that Milt is waiting to hire his assistants until after Stanford's announcement. Hoping Stanford's current coaching staff isn't switched up too much, but very possible the new coach comes in and wipes the staff out, even if the role is given to Eskind
Seriously. Can we get off the Stanford coaching speculation chat? Sit back a week and see what happens. Let’s talk about the other jobs out there.
Stanford was very successful the last time they had a non-distance head coach. Most of you have argued kids are going there for more than the coach, they won't transfer after losing their coach, so why MUST it be a distance head coach?
