MAX HR too high??

Alright so recently, I read Hadd training and thought it was a good approach. I decided to do a max hr test (all out 800m then 400m) I'm 17 yrs old and i got 240 bpm. And im 100% sure this is correct because ive seen my hr got up to at least 225 multiple times. Anyway for Hadd training easy pace would be around 150 or 70% of max hr. So i have a question, my 70% would be 170 about so should i run at that bpm? I tried running at 150 but it was superrr hard to keep my heart rate low enough it kept going up.till like 180.

Also why is my hr max 240?? That seems crazy and this is my 4th year of HS track so i have experience but my times suck so I am doing Hadd.

That heart rate doesn’t seem possible. I would think your max should be around 200.

It’s certainly possible - mine used to go up to 228 quite often in training when I was in my mid twenties to early thirties. And since I never wore a HR monitor in racing, it might have gone higher still. And my resting HR at the time would go as low as 32. Maybe some people just have a big range?

Disclaimer: I don't do Hadd. I'm not a distance runner. However, I've used HRMs for over 20 years.

While 240 is higher than the average person your age, the 220 minus age formula is for the average person. Quite a few runners have much higher MHR. In your case, 240 is nothing to worry about. My MHR is about 35 beats higher than this formula would predict.

Also, if I understand Hadd correctly, you can train at up to 75% of MHR, which would put you at 180, which is where you said you feel comfortable... 150 is too low.

If you'd like to determine your Lactate Threshold HR, then use the Joe Friel method. The Friel method determines your LTHR within a couple of beats for your tempo runs. Then, the recovery pace is 30-50 beats slower. Do a search for Joel Friel Heart Rate and you'll find several summaries of his method.

Thanks I'll check him out. And I'm not sure what my resting hr is, i think its around 50-60 so yeah a pretty big HR range.

Why would you think that? I'm over 40 and my max is 200.
