My local untimed one benefits a soup kitchen. Yeah, it's not a competitive event. Whatever. It is what it is. It's something to get people out of the house and exercising a bit, and provides some money to a charity. I don't think that is either lazy or greedy in any way, and guess what? It's not supposed to be competitive. Shocking, I know.
But how are all the LRC’ers going to get their egos stroked if no one knows that they ran a 17:xx 5k and took first in their age group?!?!
Most “races” now are social events. No one cares about your 17 minute 5k. The money is for the charity and to hang out with a few hundred people. If you’re worried about time step out your door, start your garmin, and save yourself 35 bucks.
