If Rupp's total fitnesses was represented by 1 can of beans , 2 cans of soup , and 4 bananas , Rupp would have lost 1 banana and a can of soup.
I agree.
Considering he can't run, he has lost all of it.
big picture rupp will lose no real fitness. years of distance running + cross training + incredible ability will allow for him to be right where he was if not better. He's not a high school kid who just started running 20 miles a week for a year.

Wonder how quickly Rupp will regain fitness after not running for months. Definitely won't perform to his full potential at the 2020 Olympics.
Maybe he will preform better, forced rest, alternative conditioning giving himself a running rest, don't be surprised if he comes back fresher and with a legitimate shot at another medal.
agreed. he trains harder than any of the east africans for sure, only mo is really at his level of training. If 40 mile treadmill runs and casual sub-4 miles in workouts arent' doing it for him, he probably needs some rest. For anyone who hasn't heard about galen's training, go read about the workout he did about an hour after running 8:07 for 2 miles.
Best to check in with the overweight weekend cycling warriors wearing Lycra who he's now training with on the weekends.
List of ingredients for the chili I spent yesterday afternoon making:
1 lb ground beef
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 -15 ounce can of tomato sauce
1 cup beef broth
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
It only takes 20 minutes to come together, and is great frozen and reheated or on gamedayz!
Isn’t this the longest Galen been out? He’s going to be totally rested!
If Galen fitness is the above chili recipe he’s has lost only the 1/2 teaspoon of pepper that’s it.
This is Rupp's first long break from running. The question is not how much fitness he'll lose, but whether he'll even bother coming back. He now has the opportunity to do other things and will likely find something that interests him more. Running is boring.
I think he will follow in Salazar's footsteps and buy a restaurant.

Probably almost nothing, relatively speaking. You don't train 6-7 days a week at an elite level and suddenly lose it all with a month of rest. A large lung capacity, high VO2 max, improved mitochondrial density...those serious physiological changes built over a decade take near as long to entire diminish. If his Achilles was fully healed, he could jump out of bed right now and jog a 30 minute 10km; even if he took 6 months off no running. Anyone who has trained with elite athletes knows their performances only ever change by 1-2%, even after large rest.
I disagree!
If he was able to cross train, perhaps he would'nt lose too much, but with achilles surgery he won't be able to walk with out cruches for a month.
