When I said 2:01:39 is the best performance I was well aware how close the 5k and 10k records are too. I could accept either answer, I just try to consider that the 2:01 Kipchoge ran was so far ahead of what anyone has accomplished so far, except for perhaps the 2:05 in NYC. I just think 78 seconds off the world record is by far a superior performance mentally and physically when you consider all of the things that have to go right to run a successful marathon at that level.
About Farah being a better winner than Bekele, I have to bring up that Bekele won against far better competition. Geb, El G, and Sihine are among the short list of all-time great runners. Farah raced some incredible athletes, but nowhere near the same volume as Bekele. With that said, I respect your opinion about the overall medal haul and how important that is. I just think it should be noted that Kipchoge won his track golds over Bekele and El G as well. Again, I could take either opinion. This discussion is awesome!
p.s. What about Sileshi Sihine? His whole career was overshadowed by all-time greats galore. Here are his PRs: 7:29, 12:47, 26:39 and 6 world championship silver medals (1 in XC), also a bronze somewhere along the line.
