they changed the side pockets on my newest pair making them much harder to use. there's a weird flap over the top that makes them much harder to access

You will be poor quickly enough if you spend that kind of money on shorts! A fool and his money...
...and their cost is really only equivalent to a top tier shoe.
Except the shoes would be a better use of money. You could get a few pairs for that.
Buy shoes. Wear them out mercilessly. Become a better runner.
Get some shorts with many pockets. They need to be small enough so gels don't bounce.
I use these:

I put them in my hat. I'm kinda short, so I don't have to reach up that far to get them. True story.
There weren't gels available at New York until very late in the race, like around mile 17. Only being able to fit two in my Brooks Sherpa 2" splits, I ended up carrying 3 in my hand. I was trying to find viable alternatives because I really didnt want to carry them but it ended up not being an issue at all. Used the ones in my hand at miles 2, 5 and 8 and then had free hands the rest of the way.
I also have tried a very tiny, slim waist pack thats just big enough for a phone from Nathan sports earlier in my marathoning, it works but its definitely a tad annoying. Having had success with carrying in hand, I would never use it again (aside from the well deserved ridicule I would subject myself to for wearing what amounts to a fanny pack.)
Don't let anyone convince you to use fewer gels. They're just too focused on looking like a pro, but if they actually were a pro they'd have custom bottles full of carbs every 5k. There is a ridiculous ego component to the "I only take 2 gels" crowd that is incredibly self-defeating.
Tracksmith Twilight Split shorts have 3 large inside pockets in the rear, and you could easily fit two gels in each pocket. Also a good racing short in general, you won't look like a basketball player who stumbled into a marathon.
Safety pin to the outside of singlet tail, left and right hip, won’t move or rub...
Gels take 30 mins to kick in.
What??? No doubt I feel it in less than 3 minutes.

Mentally it hits immediately.
1 in my glove
2 in my shorts
grab about 2 en route
5 total gels plus a bit of gatorade at ever aid station
I firmly believe people 'hit the wall' when they run out of calories, not due to muscular fatigue, so I never miss a chance to fuel up.

I must have a very efficient insulin system (in fact I know I do) because I go from bonking to sailing in minutes. I go though about a dozen gels a week, this same scenario plays out every day.

First-timer here. I've done one on my last 2 long runs (16 and 20 miles respectively), but for the 20 miler I did have some gummy chews. Worried if I do more than 2 gels on race day (at mile 10 and 18 or so), I'll have to poop myself ha. Had to go soon after finishing 20-milers and those things have caffeine and such. Think I will carry 2 in a back pocket, some of those chews that are super-easy to use and if I need more on-course it sounds like they will have.
It's too big of a pain for me to mess with safety pins, so I staple them to the waist of my running shorts and then rip them off as needed.
Just buy these Ffs

Two gels back pocket
Three side pocket
Three side pocket
Enough room for 8/9 gels.
And they awesome shorts.
Just go with a full fuel vest, man.
Carries water, gels, bars, a poncho for when it rains...
My best pocketed shorts are by Altra, but I still use a Nathan Vaporkrar waist pack in marathon training and racing. Its low profile, with tightening straps along with elastic. Fits an iPhone as well as gels during training. For racing, I carry six gels, some chomps, pace card, salt pills.
Looks like a new version is out, so my 2016 version (have 2) is $29 on sale. Just handier to use the belt with zippered front pocket for easy access and no bounce.
When people say they hold them in their hand, do you literally hold them, or do you something like rubber bands to keep them in place? Seems to me that it would be annoying to have to physically hold them.
I go shirtless and safety-pin them to my nipples.

I just hold them. Nothing else. I stack them in 2s with one flipped around so they take up less space. I'm able to transfer all into one hand when grabbing water cup, then switch back carrying in both hands to even out.
