Will accidents eventually end the ability of coaches to allow runners to do long runs off campus alone? Every year I hear stories of kids being hit by cars and ADs wanting to find "solutions".

Even the thought of this shows how disastrous helicopter parenting is.

You might be the biggest pu$$y I've ever come across for just thinking such a thing. Are you kidding me right now?

This is definitely a worry of mine that would drive me away from coaching if our AD ever came up with the stay on campus solution.
We ran off of the school property on the public roads … in the 6TH GRADE.
Universities do not resist the worse tendencies of helicopter parenting. Quite the opposite -- they magnify it. It's completely out of control.
My college recently purchased 17 alter-G treadmills so the entire men's team can run inside, on an reduced gravity environment, for every run/workout. They've set it up so we can watch youtube, so its pretty cool.
I go to a conservative Christian university, if that makes any difference.
Allow? Since when do universities have any say in what a student does off campus?

Stay home and don't procreate.
It's a fake justification. The real reason is that the universities don't want to ruin their rep by letting skinny little twink boys run shirtless all over the town.
I've never heard of this being a thing. What about a normal practice? You are going to end up possibly more than 6 miles away from campus. My team went out to some country roads a few weeks ago without our coach for long run. Everyone got back and then we realized 2 of the guys must have gotten lost, so we had to drive around for 30 minutes looking for them.
all runners need to be lectured on how to properly run on the streets. I know a lot of people who are just totally clueless and act like cars will never hit them. In the mean time the best solution is probably to just create a list of the best routes with minimal traffic and do those a lot.

this
Yeah, let's change the rules to keep athletes safe and not let them leave campus.
On another topic, how many students died last year from shootings on campus? Maybe there are some other rules we need to look at changing first...
What? Why would this even be a question? What’s next, making us run while holding on to a rope like when we went for walks in preschool?
There is no reason that a team can't use a track or grass field for training. Putting students at unnecessary risk is bad policy and not taking the students safety into account.

Rope triggers me. It reminds me that I was never a slave like my other classmates who were never slaves. I feel guilty that I was never a slave and should give reparations to other people who were never slaves.
...
On the other hand, fully 110 billion humans have been born since the beginning. The single most powerful human in history was Genghis Khan. The poorest person in America lives in luxury compared to Khan.
Waaaaahhhhhhh. So you're saying Genghis Khan was a bigger celebrity than Beyonce? I don't believe it.

haha. i was going to say the same thing.
how will the kids ever survive at college when they are taken away from their moms and can't breastfeed anymore?!
they're adults. they can vote and drive a car they can surely run wherever the h*ll they want to run. people get hit by cars all the time ON campuses.
you scare me.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
