Bingo! I would add in performance as well.
Health and fitness may not be synonymous but they sure as Hell as are closely tied. No health, no fitness.
And the correlation between fitness and performance may not be 100% but it's damn sure close to it.

Looking to pros for health advice is like consulting a trust-funder on financial advice.
Incredible story! Keep up the food work
Here's the thing about Pros.
They are supremely talented individuals that put in an insane amount of work to maximize their talent. BUT... they don't do many things different than any other runner it's just that they have the ability. Just like your "competitive runner" they do 2 a days, they do a few days of track work, they do the same dang workouts, they are just able do them VERY fast.

So yesterday I had 4 large grilled smoked sausage, 2 beers and a large amount of potato chips. How much did I shorten my lifespan?

Correct. Look at Tom Brady's diet now. It's insane. And he's performing at near peak level.
-drinks 37 glasses of water a day
- No tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, eggplant, coffee, white sugar, white flour, gluten, dairy, GMO, fruit (except an occasional banana in a smoothie)
I can understand for tomatoes and peppers as they're acid but eggplants ? First time I hear an athlete avoiding them, what's wrong with eggplants ?
“[Tom] doesn’t eat nightshades, because they’re not anti-inflammatory. So no tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, or eggplants. Tomatoes trickle in every now and then, but just maybe once a month. I’m very cautious about tomatoes. They cause inflammation.“

I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure concussions are a lot worse for your health than tomatoes.

This feels like a pointless answer. people aren't machines, of course they aren't going to keep objectively perfect diets.

Don't forget that he used to smoke cigarettes as well.
What! How fast is Bill Rodgers anyway? I'm sure he runs slower than me if he smokes and eats spoonfulls of yucky mayo!
Pizza is still unhealthy and tastes disgusting:
The bread is white and has all sorts of chemicals like dough conditioner
Tomato sauce is so yucky and unhealthy. My brother eats it everyday like it's a 6th food group. I'm surprised we came from the same parents!
The meat is probably deep fried and I tasted a pepporonni. It tasted unhealthy.
Pizza is unhealthy OK!

Cathy the 13 year old from the land down under should see this thread and not be afraid of pizza. Deep dish pizza is of course crap but a thin crispy base won't hurt you. Just be careful of your ingredients. Banana bread is a good desert for after dinner. I consider banana bread can be a healthy desert.
Believe it or not, I'm seeing this thread 3 or 4 months after this post

NO, you are not thinking! That's like saying that, if somebody who smokes lives to 100, then there is no problem with smoking! No, if they hadn't have smoked they might have lived to 105 or whatever.
Likewise, maybe Nick might now be Olympic Champ if he had paid more attention his diet.
One thing a great diet does - obviously - is make sure that your immune system is in great shape. And, that will result in less infections, less cold and flu and less time lost in training and less below par days when an athlete is under the weather.
I have no doubt that hundreds of athletes have failed to reach their highest possible level of achievement because of their poor diets.
I agree! But if I eat healthy then why do I get sick a lot?

Maybe you're not eating healthy or not eating enough calories/fat.

Thoughts?
