This might be long... lol
We left town for the summer to attend this 2 month xc camp. Ended up the camp was too "intro" to running and my kids weren't really enjoying it. They were talking to this other runner and she invited them to come run with her school team (if her coach was okay with it). As it turns out he was really open to the idea. His team has about 20 girls so plenty of different paces for my girls. They are the biggest classification of school in the state and have made it every year for like 10 years. Placing in the top 3rd-7th each time. They run a 5k whereas my girls run 3200 xc so I figured whatever they are doing would still be an improvement on the 20-something mile max my kids would be doing back home. My kids have been so fortunate to be able to run with this coach and they are REALLY enjoying the experience!
Anyway, my 17 to is up to 40 mpw this week and the other 2 are at 30. They haven't been racing because they are doing so much running and a lot of it is quite quick. As an example, today was 3xmile repeats at avg 6:06 for my oldest. Plus cd/wu etc.
To the point. The girls decided theyd like to at least attend the large meet that happens the last weekend of July. It would mean a qualifying race on July 13th. The qualifying race shouldn't require much effort (or any) possibly. 3 advance and some years there aren't even 3 in each race/age. They are trying to convince me the big meet will give them an opportunity to see if they've improved after 2 months. A real race against real competition.
They'll be up to 40 and 50 miles respectively by then if they continue to run well and I'd like everyone's opinion on their idea.
If they race, when do they need to stop doing the xc workouts to race effectively? 1 or 2 days? More? I'm kind of scared their bodies will be tired from all the workouts and a bad race could make them doubt the work they've put in. Does that make sense?
