I made many good attempts at 400m...never could break 60.0. Didn't matter if I was fresh or 10 minutes off a 5K, 60.X is all I had in turnover.
Never maxed a 3200m, but I can triangulate to around 9:30 based off 5K/10K. I was an aerobic type, others are speed types. I never cracked 2:06 in the 800 either but was 30:xx in the 10K.
MATT TEBO
8.47. BARELY could break 60 for the 400m.
2nd at Nike Outdoor Nationals.

HS - 400? 880 2:03; mile 4:20; 2 mile 9:13; 5k 15:36 strength over speed
College - mile 4:11; 2 mile 4:43; 3 mile 13:10; 10k 28:31 clearly strength over speed
BTW, 3 mile was in the NCAA indoor and 10k PR was only because the last 2k was in 5:18. I couldn't run a sub 4, but I could compete above that distance.

Not gunna do it.
The catch is, he's never done an open 400, and the 64 was the last in a set of 10x400 on grass. :)

See, this is illustrative of the problem in this thread. We're getting a mix of legitimate and illegitimate answers. If he never raced so much as a 4x400m relay leg, is it legit to say he had 64-second 400 speed? No.
Random workout times for a 400m "PR" and 2-mile times for a serious race don't mix.
I ran a 9:30 3k off of 49 second speed.
My son couldn't break 60 in high school and ran 9:10.

Alberto Salazar 400m pr is only 57 seconds.
I've also heard that about Salazar, but find it hard to believe. He ran the equivalent of 4:00 which would mean he slowed down by 3 seconds per lap. I was a strength runner, but slowed down by 7 seconds per lap.
Al ran 3:44 point for 1500m, which is about 4:02 for the mile using standard 1.08 conversion.

The same problem with all these guys who claim to have a 400 m 60+ seconds and a 9 min 3200. They simply never raced nor trained for a 400. Then they take something like a 4x400 relay leg a few minutes after a 3200 race, or the last repetition in a long and hard workout, or maybe the fastest last lap in a longer race as their PR. They say it is the maximum they are capable of, but in principle they could be easily running a couple of seconds faster, more so if they trained specifically for it, though.

59 second 400 (relay split)/10:19 3200
I was fresh for the relay split, but I know I probably could have gotten down to 56 had I focused on the 400.
Eventually got down to 54 for the 400 (in practice) and 3:52 for the 1500/14:51 5000.
