Did you see him nearly run down Coleman after that start? Lyles was 5 meters back and nearly caught him.
I never even contemplated Lyles running 100 until this year but think he will be 100/200 World Champ next year.

That was Coleman's first race back from injury and he won. Lyles is good but he's not a 100m man. No one will beat him at 200.

The key word here is "NEARLY"
If he learns how to get a decent start and run the curve, he's going to put up some great times. Raw speed is what's getting him by at the time. Baring injury, if he dedicates himself to the sport, what he can accomplish is scary. He's just two years removed from high school. Will only get faster and stronger in the years to come.
Lyles took nearly .2 to react to the gun after the false start. He has the bigger upside, it seems, because Coleman has an incredible start but not a great top speed.

Coleman had a bad start today as well. If he got a good start he would destroy the field. The false start definitely rattled everyone
Both Lyles and Coleman probably have the ability to be contenders for a world/olympic medal in the 100m given the current crop of 100m runners. I wouldnt give either much of an edge. I agree Lyles has upside and will continue to improve. This wasnt Coleman's best though, either.
The difference between them IMO, is that Lyles can compete in the 100m despite it not being his best event. He definitely should expect some solid improvements in the 200m
On the other hand, lets not get ahead of ourselves, plenty of sprinters fail to improve past 20 or 21. Ryan Bailey is a good recent example. After he made the 2012 team, I thought he was the future too, seemed to have the top end speed to keep advancing. His PR remains from when he was 21 at 9.88.
Let's remember that Usain Bolt was a pure 200 meter man (and even a global bronze medalist in that event) with long term plans to move UP to the 400 --- before almost accidentally finding success while moving DOWN to the 100 on his trainers request.

No top speed? He's the 60m world record holder and champion. He has the most top speed in the field.
As far as top speed goes, look at Noah and Christians respective 60m prs to 100m prs. Coleman has a 6.34 to Lyles 6.57. Thats a .23 difference. Whereas in the 100 its 9.82 to 9.88. Lyles makes up a big gap on athletes like Coleman and Baker who have great starts. Its clear Christian has a great top speed since he was running 6.4 in the 60 last year to correlate with his 9.82, but you can see the greater difference is with Noah.
Lyles final 50m was certainly imporessive, however I'm going to put a word in for Reece Prescod who basically went toe to toe with Lyles for the final 50m (remaining essentilly a yard down the entire way). Another raw young talent

It's not about injury. Coleman is a pure sprinter. He's suffering muscle failure the last 20 metres of 100 metres dash. Even when he's 100%, Coleman will always be the front runner attempting to hold off the long & lean 100 &200 men the last 20 metres.
At 200m!
100m is all coleman. He is looking like Gatlin with her perfect from from start to finish. Lyles is depending on his closing speed too much, and looked at of wack in the first 60m.
Man had coleman been fresh going into USAs and Worlds....dude would be king.

No, he was not 5 meters back.

You don’t know the definition of top speed.
Stop posting.

Learn the sport, its always been a young mans game.
Lyles is using the 100 to prep for a 200 world record attempt in this off year from championships.
He is learning the 100 as he showed tonight, very poor race tactics.

Race tactics? In the 100?
Coleman is ideal for indoors as he has a good start and the longer guys don't have a chance to unwind before the 60M race is over. Lyles had a good reaction time on the false start but got left in the blocks in the real race. I've seen several races of his and he's the only one picking up speed (great burst) in the last 20M. If he gets his start down, he'll be hard to beat.
