The full title of Tim's book is "Wannabe Distance God: The Thirst, Angst, and Passion of Running in the Chase Pack." Tim held a couple of school records at the University of Kansas under Bob Timmons, but -- like most of us -- never got to whatever level it was that he aspired to. So if you were good enough to beat Shorter in 1983 (which is pretty good, considering that Shorter was still fast enough to beat Rod Dixon over 10k in 1982), but slow enough to consider yourself "far behind" the top guys in a race, you might identify with Tim's story. You can find his book on amazon.com, which is where I picked up a copy.

Yep, my library doesn't have it. I'll have to go to Amazon.
Funny you should mention Rod Dixon getting beat by Shorter in 1982. I ran against (kind of) Dixon in 1982 in a 10K. He was doing a lot of those Diet Pepsi series back then. I was five seconds behind him at the mile mark and that was the last I ever saw of him despite getting second or third in that race. In 1983 I must have caught Shorter on a bad day or recovering from an injury or something like that. I passed him with about 300m or 400m left to go in a 10K.
