Should I look at it as a separate training block from the main XC season, taking a short break in between? Or should it just flow into XC training? I'm trying to hit 75 mpw for my summer training, and my largest week ever has been a 55.

Summer training is cross country training. I would not take a break from summer into season. I would take a break from track going into summer training. Especially If you are trying to increase by 20 miles this summer. You want to make sure you are healthy going into summer training. I would advise against this big of a increase, but you know your body.
Starting summer training is the question. People have different opinions, but in my training I like to start training about 5 to 6 months out from championship racing. That gives you 12 to 14 weeks of base, 8 weeks of season and 4 weeks of sharpening and temper. Then I would take a week off and one week light week running and start it again for track.
I've seen a two week break between track and summer hurt more kids than help them. Especially now days when kids sit inside all day if they aren't doing a sport. If you take a break at least do some easy running at least 4 times throughout the week.
Just a thought. wrote:

I would agree with that for the 2nd week, but for the first week. It's not just about a physical break, after hard training cycle of build up and racing taken a week completely after I think is more of a mental thing. It gives you a break from thinking about running. I have a friend who would take 3 weeks off, because he was mental burnt by championship racing, but he would always come back hungry and focused.
It's all preference, but this is my thoughts. how has it hurt them?
