The week before that trail race I went for a morning run .. day before. Shake things out. Up until then I had been gobbling thru short runs so slow and in pain w the piriformis and sciatic.
A fast bad storm caught me. Lightning effing everywhere. Downpour for the ages. I got scared. I’m scatting to work and look down and my watch pace is 5:30. No pain.
When the adrenaline kicks in. You can usually roll no matter the circumstance!

Regarding my GPS watch, I searched and searched for a simple stop watch feature, but could not find it. I even tried my cheapo Casio 80s-style digital watch, and it had a stop watch feature, but it did not seem to have a lap-split-saving feature, as on my Timex Ironman that died. That watch stores either 30 or 100 lap slits.
Just got out of a warm shower. :-) Had to wash my hair twice.
stat - Yes, I would like to do some faster work prior to the upcoming 5k. I gather that is why I had a yen to do some intervals today (I tend to hate intervals).
OR, glad you're safe. Even though scary I bet it was fun. I'd blame all heck breaking loose just because you planned 800s. Please post the video

Pappy - Yes! All heck broke loose because planned 800s. It was too much for the universe’s central flux capacitor to handle. Indeed, it was scary, but fun. I was so drenched that nothing mattered. The scary part was the lightning...otherwise,it was a heck of an adventure.
When I got home, I took off my shoes and was able to pour out water from them when I turned them over.
Trying to post the video. I see poeple put videos in their replies, and I thought I could do likewise. In any case, the video is not very long at all. The main thing of interest is how you can barely see me out there.

I remember running through an early spring snowstorm that turned into a thunderstorm, back when I was living in Wisconsin. That was pretty interesting...

JtA: I asked about the shoes because I suspect that they played a big part in my own shin splints back in the day. (Stopped wearing Nikes, no more shin splints...). Of course, "user error" probably played a part in it for me, too.
statfanatic: I agree with you about the hill drills, actually. "Bouncy" was not really the right word. "Springy" might be better. Although either would be extremely optimistic as a description of what I've been doing, to be honest. Vertical is not my strong suit.
Allen: I've found that another benefit with the trail running is that it pretty much forces me to shorten my stride and get up on my forefoot more (the alternative being a face-full of dirt). As someone who has historically had a bad habit of over-striding and getting back on my heels, I've found that to be helpful. Also, I just like running in the woods.
Sub 6:00: I have been enjoying the "long fast" runs, to be honest, although mine are not really all that long or all that fast. But they've been coming along, and that's the main thing at this point.
jewbacca - I currently use the Garmin Forerunner 35, but have been eyeing the 735XT...it is pretty expensive, though.
GFMAH - Splendid—just splendid...lol. :-)
Coach Jeff - my marathon PR is 3:04:00, which I ran at the Wisconsin marathon back in 2014. Same marathon in which I imploded last week. I actually hadn't done a full since the 2014 WI, but have done two 50k's.
Pretty interesting, I had done 5 fulls fr 2011 - 2013, ranging from 3:33 - 3:40. Drastic diet shift, which I've maintained, in Jan 2014 led to better quality workouts and a 3:13:42 at Myrtle Beach in Feb 2014 followed by the 3:04. Ran a 1:27:xx at the Virginia Beach half in 2015, then ran a lot of easy miles and drank a lot of cold beers for 2 plus years. Trying to get back it!
Allen - Besides Grand Rapids, I'll be running a small town 10k in August and a half in the Chicago suburbs on 10/6, which is the day before the Chicago marathon. Despite my 40:01 10k PR, I've won my AG past three years. Usually hot and hilly. Hoping to crack the 40 minute barrier.
Gordon - hope to see your mileage start increasing before the Chicago build! It is weird to think about running while you're running.
James - you've come along way the past few months. Stick with it through the tough days, start doing some of the ancillary work, and listen to your body. You'll be in a good place in a year.
Consistency - enjoying following your conversation. Congrats on the 3:01! You will drop 80 seconds.

I'm getting worried now. A couple weeks ago I was tripping and falling multiple times during runs, and now I have developed severe dementia. I really gave you a training plan for the week? Email or here on this thread? I've been forgetting things at work, lately, too. It's been embarrassing to keep asking clients the same questions over and over. Glad you got home safely. I was out on my bike last year when a terrific storm rolled in. Barely kept the bike upright, pelted with hail and torrents of horizontal rain. But, like you say, it's the near lightning strikes that are the scariest. The flash and the deafening crackling crash at the same time (while gripping my classic steel-framed Stowe).

Allen...no dementia for you, but perhaps for me? Were you referring to me or yourself when you talked about “all easy” etc. and then the 5k on Saturday? I thought you were suggetsing that course of action, and saying that I should run that hilly 5k here in town.

Ahhh! My bad. My writing was less than clear (and I was an editor for much of my former career!) I was describing MY plan for the week, as I have a 5K on Saturday. But if you're racing, too, I might suggest the same:
Tuesday -- normal training day. For me, an easy 7 miles. For you, whatever sort of progression you'd like.
Wednesday -- 5 miles easy with 3 x 1 minute at 5K race pace.
Thursday -- 4 miles easy with 2 x 1 minute at 5K pace.
Friday -- 2 miles easy with 1 minute at 5K pace.
You could make those runs a little longer, but this basic three-day taper leaves me feeling fresh and ready to race.
But I still have dementia, I fear!

Ha, no, I do recall seeing that conversation. I cut out the processed crap and refined sugar. Paleo like diet. Don't each much fruit though. High protein and fat, lots of vegetables, some fish. Red wine and beer.
OR -- Just FYI, in my simple 9-day cycle, I include a long run, an LT workout and a VO2max work. The rest are easy/recovery days (with one day including strides).
Last Friday was my long run. Today was my LT day, and Saturday's 5K will count as my VO2max workout.
Last year, I also included a medium-long run in my 9-day cycle, but for now it is just another easy day. I may re-evaluate after this week.
OR - You can setup your watch so that the "back" button can be used for a lap button. Enter the run activity on your watch, go to Options -> Laps -> Lap Key and set the option to on. Every time you hit the back button while in the run activity it will record a lap. You should see it display the lap time briefly on screen (assuming lap alert is enabled) and you should be able to set your watch for a screen that shows lap metrics like lap time and lap speed. I bet one of the three screens is setup for this unless you changed the default screens.
I was out running before that storm hit our area. It resulted in a tornado warning. My wife was not too pleased that I was not home when they issued the warning. I checked the radar before going out and estimated I had 30min of running before it would hit me. I estimated about right and was home before things really started to blow. Planned 60min run cut to 29:52. Pace for the splits look like on OR style run 8:23, 7:43, 7:26, 7:03.
