There was, what, only like 30 elite men runners in Boston. This is a pitiful number of competitors when other sports like cycling or rollerblading have upwards of 180 elite men competing in each race. Why so few elite runners in a marathon?

Yeah but the majority of the field in cycling are equivalent to worker bees. Only a fraction of the field has any chance of winning any given race and it's a totally different dynamic with drafting and the length of races, etc.

That's the exact same thing in a marathon. Only a tiny fraction of the elite runners have any chance of winning. The rest are pack filler. And there was tons of drafting in Boston.
I think the only reason the elite runner fields aren't bigger is because of laziness.
