Yes, I mostly agree with you. Rupp by virtual of his bronze in Rio and silver in London is one of the best distance runners today regardless of his time.
I think he is in it for the money like everyone else. If I were him, I’d race Boston & Chicago every year and pocket all the appearance fees & prize money. The field in these two majors are weaker which means the likelihood of making more money is much greater. Also, Chicago offers a chance to run a fast time.
So, why would he want to do Berlin or London? He’s NOT the best (and maybe not even top 5) and in a race, nothing is guaranteed. It’s safer to race courses you know with a weaker field where the chance of winning is much greater. And if he wants to race against the best, he can do that in 2020 like he did in Rio 2016 & London 2012. He’s clearly one of the top marathoners today.
He’s making the best decision for himself and his family. Why would he not take the money & run?
