Meanwhile, Patterson's group has been catching the group from 9th-12th. Looks like he's driving the pacing trying to catch stragglers in front. He's just 4 seconds behind 12th at 41.66K.

Niskanan's ski change gamble seems smart. I was worried that he wouldn't be able to catch back up, but he's back.
for bronze

I heard from the TV that his coach shouted that there was a risk of snowfall when he was to make the second ski-change and the Finns didn't want to give him skis when it wasn't certain about what the weather would be for the last 10 km, so that is why they delayed it.
An outstanding 11th for Scott Patterson. Alex Harvey was 4th.
Poltoranin, Kazakhstan, faded from 3rd to 15th, in the last 20 mins of this 50km ski marathon. Watching on French TV, they said the problem was hypoglycymia, sorry for misspelling...no more energy in tank, no fuel.
Harvey, Canada/Quebec, finished 4th outsprinting Sundby.
Go on youtube, you will see Harvey doing wicked pullup sessions, with heavy weighted vests, and roller skiing in summer with his mates. All those elite skiiers have low bf, six packs, and well developed pecks.
In summer, Harvey is an elite mountain biker. Beast.

Unlike distance runners, who look like they´ve just been released from Auschwitz.

Farah, has similar muscle development, but even slimmer than Rupp.
In the Olympic thon in Rio, when he placed 3rd, Rupp looked quite a bit bigger compared with most of his rivals. If he ever stops running, Rupp might become quite big, like Ryan Hall.
If you want to see real thin, with little muscle development, look at guys like Mo Ahmed and Abdi...those guys can audition for..."the thin man."

Agree. Quite a race by the Finn—especially since we all know the Russians are doped to the GILLS! It’s truly disgusting that any Russians were allowed to compete at all. They are a disgrace. Harvey is basically a silver medalist-or will be when the Russian samples are retested in a few years when they figure out what Putin’s latest secret sauce is and how to test for it.

Yup. Most every elite Russian athlete has been in a state-sponsored/allowed doping program since their talent was identified as teenagers. So even if they stop months before and are 'clean', the training effects are still mostly there.
Chelsea Little wrote a fantastic editorial on the how the governing bodies have responded (or lack thereof) to the Sochi doping.
The mysteriously ineffective blood profile-passport program is particularly interesting to me, as it was heralded to be such a powerful weapon against doping by the experts.
http://fasterskier.com/fsarticle/whats-happening-russias-sochi-scandal-winds-editorial/Thanks for posting this, interesting read. I have some sympathy for the Russians, however, given the way their system is set up many of their athletes are taught from an early age that cheating is ok because everyone is doing it.
That being said, I agree none of their athletes should’ve been allowed to compete in these winter games.
It’s interesting to see how few golds the Russian athletes have won in these games. It’s very clear that Russia produces many great endurance athletes but I think the results show just how close all the competitors are in terms of talent. In past years the difference for a Russian competing clean and dirty is probably gold vs. bronze or a top 5 finish.
My only hope is the rampant doping stops so we can see some good clean competition in future years.
I'm with that other poster. Harvey deserves silver! What a race. I stayed up to watch the whole damn thing. The NBC streaming isn't too bad.
Women's 30K just started.
Marit destroying the field.
Jessica Diggins in the hunt...for a bronze, but a ways back, in around 6th...
Diggins, 7th, 3.37 behind Norwegian winner. Tragedy for Stadloeber, Austria, she went off course, when in second place, with few kms to go. Tragic, for the daughter of former Austrian cc ski champion.
Diggins, the only one to ski in t shirt with no hat...

Diggins fell. Could she have contended without falling?
No, the fall didnt make much difference. She was never going to medal in a classic race against that field.
