Bigger question is why there isn't "Summer Biathlon" - running and shooting. Think about it, would give a few lesser distance guys to compete. From what I understand that's exactly what it does for XC skiers.

Better idea: running on the ice rink, dodging hockey pucks and figure skaters. Sounds entertaining!

We already have 'running and shooting' in schools, churches, concert venues, softball practice, political rallies, etc.

Snow volleyball instead of beach volleyball?
I would have snow shoe races.
Maybe they could have a snow track (they have ice tracks after all) and have many of the track and field events but done with snow shoes.
Delving back into a topic that has been gone over again and again...
One thing I like about the idea of the winter Olympics having cross country is that it would always fall in a non-world championships year. That would definitely encourage most of the best runners from across the world to participate. It would be a lot of fun to get it back on the biggest stage, but as others have mentioned, unless it can be guaranteed to be competed on snow it isn't going to happen.
I know this is late to this one, but since the thread came back up...
There is snow volleyball

This idea has been brought up in the past. I believe Sebastian Coe said it would be a great initiative for African countries to be more involved in the Winter Olympics.
Including the cross country run in either the Summer or Winter Olympics would be a better idea than the 50 km walk for women.
Thoughts?
It should be in the Summer Olympics at least.
XC are always exciting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHoUzfqteQ8Cross country should be ran across an actual country. Countries would be interested in hosting to show off their beautiful landscape, just like on the cycling tours.
One year could be in Luxembourg or Vatican city for the short-distance types. Another year the ultra hikers could cross China. There could be relays too. There could be world records.
For those in favor of XC in the summer Olympics, do you think it should be in addition to or instead of the 10,000 on the track? If it's just added on I'd worry about diluting the longer track races.
