College women should run 8k throughout the season with a 10k championship season just like D2 and D1 men, here's why:
.) The idea of women running a shorter distance is based in sexism and the idea that the female body is too frail to go as far as men. If women can run 10ks and marathons, they can do 8k in cross country. In fact, women actually tend to perform better over long distances than men (when compared to their mile ability).
.) Catering XC to middle distance kids is ridiculous. You can't change to nature of a sport to better accompany the TRAINING needs of another group. Would you support changing the 60m dash to a 40yrd dash to better accompany footballs players who sprint in the off season? No, cause its TRACK and that's a stupid idea. It should be the same for XC.
.) If you NEED middle distance runners who only run well below 3k to make a good xc team then you simply don't have a good xc team. The rest of the division shouldn't have to race short cause you can't recruit and train long distance runners.
.) Because of how long the xc season is, running 10ks every other weekend for either men or women would result in a lot of burning out. However, 8k is short enough that the distance can be run 5-6 times before championship reason without getting worn out yet long enough that it still embodies the spirit of XC.
.) It would require marking one course. The argument that it takes roughly the same time as men to run 8k as women to run 6k makes no sense. So what. You don't do that with any other events so why does it matter even a little just because its November and not April? If you have enough time to run a 10k in a track meet where there are tons of other events, then you have enough time to run a couple 8ks or 10ks when its literally all you're doing that day.
