I have one problem with Barbers story, isn't he openly gay?
https://www.flotrack.org/articles/5064393-world-champion-pole-vaulter-shawn-barber-comes-out-as-gayIf so, then the story dosen't hold up.

Not open at the time. The story involved a Craigslist hookup with a woman but another man was being described as being present in the room with them during the hookup.
NYT says cuckolding is a key to a strong relationship these days.
How fast everyone forgets.... when this was the biggest scandal in Canadian sports history.... no Canadian was thought to be clean for years afterwards.

Brush up on your Stanley Cup history, eh?

Tobacco is recreational, alcohol is recreational, mushrooms are recreational, marijuana is recreational.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug. One of the best performance enhancers out there. And his story is a bit too far out.
I'm sorry you are really boring but cocaine is just about the definition of recreational.
You think the S American drug lords survive off of the demand from international pole vaulters?

How do you know?

Out of competition positive for cocaine?
He was 21 or something doing a bit of coke at the weekend, I don't see the issue personally.
I'll admit I don't care if an athlete does coke or not . Yes , in competition it could help a pole vaulter but do we really think someone as good as Barber was doing coke to win the Canadian champs - I don't.
I do care though about only legitimate excuses being accepted by the doping authorities. Ever since he came out as gay, I have wondered if his excuse was real or not? Maybe it was a threesome with the man involved and he was embarrassed to say it, maybe he wasnt' gay at the time, I don't know but do know it's made me question the validity of the excuse.

Most of those sports (jumps/throws and the like) have the athlete aiming for some sort of hyper-flexed muscle at the right moment for the extra boost. Supposedly cocaine would make the body more suspectible to such?
Also, it could help mental focus (for some people at least).

Likely it was just part of his normal prep routine, he thought nothing of it, and knew he could always rely on Canada to cover it up anyway if caught.

From a WADA V-P:
It's time to stand up and clearly say this has to stop," added Helleland.
"This situation can't be accepted any longer.
"The different organisations are in danger of losing all credibility.
"And without credibility Governments around the world will start asking questions about how the funding is spent.
"Governments need to believe in the anti-doping system.
"A system with transparency and integrity."

It is very selective if the Government officials want to end careers or not. This guy was well know as in Canada back in the day.
"Canadian wheelchair athlete and Olympic champion Jeff Adams will appeal a ruling banning him from competition for two years after testing positive for cocaine at the 2006 wheelchair marathon championships in Ottawa.
The independent arbitrator's ruling also means that the Toronto-based Adams is ineligible to receive federal sport funding for life"
Very concerning is that the same lawyer that concocted the Shawn Barber kissing a female and testing positive for coke when he is gay is also the same lawyer who concocted the story that Gil Roberts tested positive for a masking agent his girlfriend just happened to have upon returning from a trip to India and popped open into her mouth and then went and kissed him enough to have it absorb into his body and create a positive test.
Complete crap that both got off on this excuse. Opens the door for so many other similar defenses since that is where doping cases start - with precedent case law. Lets the athlete off the hook and neither case presented actual scientific data on absorption rates of such drugs consumed orally via another individual's use who then kisses someone.

The woman involved provided sworn testimony as to what happened. It wasn’t just what he said happend, she said it happened that way too.
A lot of gay guys have had long term girlfriends and wives (and children) forget just sleeping with women before coming out as gay. Do you not believe that Bruce Jenner is now Kaitlyn Jenner? How can a guy who was married and had children now be a woman?
Do you honestly believe that Shawn Barber coming out as gay proves that he didn’t previously have sex with women? Come on.

It sounds a lot like that episode of Friends when Ross and his wife organised a threesome and she was only interested in the other woman.

+1
And CAS, in form of an American judge, assisted by a Canadian and British judge, confirmed USADA's ruling that the American was innocent. They don't even try to pretend to be neutral anymore.
At least here, the IOC was against letting the Canadian off the hook.
Via precedents, the athletes now have permission to use testosterone and clenbuterol and stanozolol, increase Hct by over 20%, and conveniently have all their drugs stored by their physio next door. Oh, and one is allowed to not open the door to the ooc testers, but only twice in any 12 month period.
If that's not enough, then one can top it up with TUEs.

Probably what happened is he had sex with them both but it was irrelevant to mention his exact activities with the man because the man didn't hoover up a ton of coke right before.
Canada Uses Every Trick in the Book to Own the Podium 2018-02-07 In February 2004, Canada’s 13 winter National Sport Organizations, Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), Sport Canada, WinSport Canada and VANOC started to work on a project that would become known as Own the Podium (OTP). The decision was made amid concerns that Canada had failed to win a single gold medal in the first two Games hosted in Canada, the 1976 Summer Olympics in Monreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. COC pledged to make Canada the top medal winning nation at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, and in 2005, the OTP program was launched. Now, it is a “not-for-profit organization that prioritizes and determines investment strategies for National Sport Organizations in an effort to deliver more Olympic and Paralympic medals for Canada.” Own the Podium’s largest sponsor is the government with additional funding provided by the Canadian Olympic Committee that in fact leads the project. Fancy Bears' Hack Team obtained the OTP financial records. Take a look at them to see the amount of taxpayers’ money used to satisfy sports officials’ ambitions.
Canadians use this scheme over and over again to push back their opponents in other international competitions. For example, Tim Farstad, Executive Director of Luge Canada, decided to take his part in fight against doping in Russia. He was annoyed by the fact that members of the Russian luge team Albert Demchenko and Tatiana Ivanova had been permitted to participate in the World Cup despite their Olympic ban. The Canadians are so outraged that they are going to appeal to the disciplinary committee of the International Luge Federation (FIL) seeking guidance from the Canadian Olympic Committee.

Canadian officials sound particularly cynical considering their efforts to cover up Shawn Barber and his cocaine adventures ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio. They believe that Canadian national interests come first and Canada must win prestigious competitions by all means. Own the Podium was founded to reach this goal. The project works closely with WADA and eliminates rivals when Canadian athletes can’t beat them.
https://fancybear.net/pages/canada.htmlState sponsored cover-up back fired , because the Athletics Canada officials expected a decent Olympic performance.
Makes me think of that international marathon guru high on snorting coke on the back of athletics weekly who went on to ask an old schoolmate of his friend: ‘Want a threesome with Kevin English ?’
