It's not an age group record, but she's 15. Apparently there was a Chinese girl who ran faster in 2001.

Keep in mind she's been killing it since 7th grade (4:58 Mile, 10 flat 3k). Y'all were probably saying she would burnout by now, but she seems to be doing fine.
Katelyn Touhy just ran 15:37 in her very first race at 5000m on the track.
She is in 10th grade.
Wow.

I would tend to agree with you, which means she's still got the ability to be a contender on the world level.
Nope. The only thing that made her world level was Salazar's drugs. When she realized that, she quit NOP and moved back home. I'm 100% sure she'll be extremely successful at anything she does, just not at running.

That is roughly equivalent to a 13:27 for a boy - a bit better than Rupp’s 13:37 - really great time her.
Wrong, it's more like a 13:50-13:55 equivalent. Still absolutely stunning for a HS girls sophomore running solo indoors.
Age grades at 96.7 which is about 13:41 for a 17 year old boy. That's what the comparison was about.
So can we officially crown her the latest great white hope, or should we still wait a little bit?

BTW: Tuohy is now faster at 5000m than Hasay (her idol) was in College (15:37.12 vs 15:37.29).
The game has changed significantly since Hasay was the wunderkind winning Footlocker and breaking 1500m records.
I think, in part, due to Hasay herself.
There's something about this girl that I find myself disagreeing with the lot of you. Something about her tells me she will continue. Maybe it's her stronger body (fast girls her age are sometimes shockingly thin) or it's her carefree attitude, but I have a feeling she's going to be on the national stage in no time.
(Not to say that she won't have a couple years of slower times; it's inevitable for young women in the age 17-20 age range who are still growing. I just have a feeling she will come out stronger.)
Amazing run by Touhy and without a doubt could have run faster with someone to share the pacing duties. Now that I got that out of the way; I agree with everything you said. Physically, she reminds me of Mary Decker, Kim Gallagher and Jordan Hasay, thin but powerfully built. Obviously, Touhy's progress over the next couple of years is unlikely to be a straight line pointing up. There will be a puberty or injury bump along the way, which Decker, Gallagher and Hasay all experienced, but I predict like those athletes, she will be successful at the next levels.
With that said, if I could speak to her coaches I would strongly encourage them at this stage to place less emphasis on XC and long distance and focus on speed development. The list of prepuberty distance phenoms is long, but history has shown that 800/mile speed is a better indicator of success at the next level. The longer you delay speed development the more difficult it becomes to develop.
What's the big deal? Zola Budd ran 15:01 at 17. Get back to me when this new girl breaks 15.

I'd bet the farm Katelyn will not look like she does now in 5-10 years. Many of you probably haven't met her in person, but she is really small and extremely lean.
Ummmm... ever heard of Jordan Hasay?
Absolutely! Cain was never over trained.

There is no physiological second puberty. There is beer, over eating and boys. Most of these distractions come with college and are usually indicative of a kid who no longer puts running in front of life.
Very true!
At some point, young girls go through a phase usually around puberty, but sometimes several years after puberty where her mind is on other things. Perhaps it is a boyfriend, pizza with friends or joining a sorority...physiological, there is no such thing as a 2nd puberty.

Wow. 15:18 for a 16 y.o.
How did she do in the 2000, 2004, 2008 (and 2012??) Olympics?

Found her. She changed last name. PB of 14:54. She ran a 10000m PB as recently as 2016. She has a very long career.

14:59 F17 = 13:27 M17 Probably a time that Ingebrigtsen will run or even faster this year at age 17.

2017 World Champs 10,000. Has a PR of 31:14. 9th 5000m final in Rio. No reason why Touhy couldn't have a similarly long career.

Respectfully, you’re mistaken.
“Age-Graded Scoring was originally developed to do two things:
Provide each race finisher with a percentage value score that will enable them to judge their performance against any and all others without bias to age or sex. So, no matter how old you get, your Age-Graded Score or "performance percentage" will be judged against the standard for your current age within your gender. And as your performances decline with advancing age (and they will), so too will the standards used to calculate your Age-Graded Score, thereby giving you a true measure of your performance...
Correct each person's performance, no matter what age, to what it would have been (or will be) in their "prime" athletic years. This allows for very interesting comparisons. You can compare your current performance to previous ones over the same or any distance. You can compare your performance to other runners of any age and either gender. You can even compare your performance to the elite athletes.“
I’m 60, a former elite, and my performances over 45 years of running are comparable on the age grading system.

I looked at her progression. It was not exactly linear, but she stuck it out.
No results in 2000.
9:34 (3000m) in 2001
4:23 (1500m - I don't see any 3000/5000 perf) in 2002
15:41 (5000) in 2003
16:32 (5000) in 2004
15:52 (5000) in 2005
14:54 (5000) in 2006
And then we go again...
15:59 in 2007
16:02 in 2008
9:16 (3000 - no 5000 perf) in 2009
15:16 in 2010...
She ran 15:01 in 2016
Up/down/up/down
She has however run sub 15:15 every year in the past 4 years.
Clearly, she had injury problems in her late teens and in her 20s, which she overcame again and again

Yes, she ran a 13:27 indoor 5K. She ran a sub-4 mile, too. Wow! How was that possible? Wheaties... laced with... the best that the Chinese federation could find.
No, gullible readers, she didn't really run a 13:27 or sub-4, but whatever her times were, no doubt her Wheaties were laced with something in 2001.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
