But really, I think he should just devote 2018 to marathon training and faster.
He can't really do that. He is sponsored because of his performances in ultras (the mid-length ones, not the 100 milers), not the marathon. Thus is "any surface, any distance" thing is not just a motto but it is also something of a requirement for him. To keep sponsorship he has to be competitive in ultras; to stay relevant on youtube/social media/etc. he needs to connect with his audience, most of whom are marathoners (or want to be) rather than ultra runners.
So all of these suggestions to run 5ks and 10ks and this and that are not really practical given his career situation.
But I agree he could get in the weight-room. He admitted he was "lazy" when it came to some of the weight stuff this cycle.
well....then he has to make a decision of what is his priority is then based on what he's trying to do with the marathon . boo hoo:
(1) don't do ultras and qualify for the marathon trials (and get 70th place) and maybe lose his sweet sponsor gig
OR
(2) keep doing ultras and living in Boulder and have a sweet sponsorship gig and chime in on Letsrun. and run beautiful mountains and continue to not garner respect from distance runners on letsrun who competed in college
OR
(3) keep doing ultras, modify his training a tiny bit to work on 5k/10k speed, do some extra lifting and keep his sweet sponsorship gig.
seems like a no-brainer, but we runners have irrational goals and desires.
i know a 2:13 marathoner who has a full-time job and no sponsor. If I was Sage, i would keep doing what he's doing and maybe modify towards option 3 and get his little 2:18 or whatever and do the trials. he knows he can't run much faster than that so just qualifying is his olympics
