Certainly the greatest age range. He was running 3:37 for 1500m, 22 years ago.

Greatest range/longevity combo maybe. Bernard Lagat has now competed at USA championships at every distance from 800m to 10k and is qualified to do so in the marathon as well.
What year did he compete in USA championships in the 800? I'm curious because IAAF lists his pr as 1:46 in 2003.
2009

Sure, Aouita's 1:43 - 27:30 is great,
but 1:44 - 59:30 for Choge??????
Choge never made a serious attempt at 10k, but I can guarantee he could have run 27-low, maybe even 26 high with the kind of range he had.
3:29 15 speed, 59:30 half endurance??
He could be as good as Geb at the 10k
No way Aouita runs 59:30
Choge is the range GOAT
Choge was not 1:44 he was 1:44.86. No where near fast enough to win a major international meet. What makes Webb and Aouita stand out is their 800 speed.
lmk when Aouita and Webb run 59:30
World class from 800m to 21k is far more impressive than world class from 800m to 10k.
sure webb was better at 800, but Choge is pretty much the same as Webb at the 1500 and far, far faster in the 5k and over the longer stuff
By performances you could maayybbee say webb was the better athlete, but in terms of range Choge is the GOAT
Sure the 800 time is slower, but Choge could have gone far faster if he stuck with the shorter distances as well, and his half performances far exceeds the 27:30 stuff Aouita and Webb ran
In terms of range Choge is the GOAT

Also, 1:44.86 can win "major internationals meets"
It would have won worlds in 2015 and and gotten silver in 2017,

No. Alan MF Webb is clearly the GOAT range. Who else ran 3:46 and 27:44 within like 18 months of each other. Also have heard he could run a 46 in the 400.
WEBB'S BACK!!!! BAE-BEE!!!!!!

By that logic a runner with a 1500 pr of 3:50 could have won the gold medal in Rio.
800m is the only event where Aouita was significantly better than Choge. They're nearly dead even at 1500, even though Choge has spent much less time at the event. Choge utterly destroys Aouita at 3000 with his 4 sub 7:30's, and 5 seconds better at 5000. No serious person would doubt Choge will demolish Aouita's 10,000 PR when he gets around to running that now-uncommon event. The 59 HM would break a tie if there were a tie, but obviously there's not, it's just gravy.

Augustine Choge is the range goat, sorry man
1:44 800
12:53 5k

Eluid Kipchoge
3:50 mile
2:03:05 marathon
I was wondering why no one had mentioned Kipchoge yet. Dude is the GOAT.
I feel it would be wrong to conduct this entire discussion without mentioning the name Rod Dixon. That being said, Lagat could rightly hold this honor. Not only does he have great range distance wise, but he also has it age wise. The man has run successfully through about three or four generations of normal running careers.
Bekele has Kipchoge hands down with 3:32 / 2:03:03. On top of the 5/10k WRs. Cant find any 800 time, thought. But Id expect great things.
Usain Bolt has run a 9.58 100m (better than a 1:43 800) and an 18 minute 5000m. (on the roads)
1500m to Half Marathon or Marathon is far more competitive than 800 - Half Marathon.
3:28 and 59:xx from Mo Farah
3:50 and "2:00:25" from Eliud Kipchoge
800m to Half Marathon, the goat has got to be Choge.
That said, I reckon El Guerrouj could have been excellent at the Marathon imo, his strength was excellent.

If the baseline is how close the guy was to being a top competitor in the event at the time he was focusing on the event, Dixon may be the correct Answer (Olympic Bronze in 1972 at 1500 to iconic New York Marathon win in 1983).

Said Aouita:
800: 1:43.86
1500: 3:29.46
Mile: 3:46.76
3k: 7:29.45
2-mile: 8:13.45
5k: 12:58.39
10k: 27:26.11
Abderrahim Goumri:
1500 - 3:39.80
3000 – 7:32.36
5000 – 12:50.25
10,000 – 27:02.62
Half M – 1:01:19
Marathon – 2:05:30 (former Moroccan record)
I didn't realize just how fast the late Abderrahim Goumri was over several distances. His 5000 is smoken and he's faster than Mo in the 3000, 5000 & marathon! I think Goumri's versatility has to be considered in this discussion. That 5000 & marathon are impressive. A real smoker!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abderrahim_GoumriBekele obviously had the best range. His 3:32 is sublime, and is close to the world record. He is equally as far off 1500m and marathon world records(6 seconds). I don't think he is into 1500m unfortunately, but I look forward to him destroying the marathon this year. I'm always wondering what he has done for 800m. He must have done 800's before he became famous? He could have been 1:40-1:45, who knows.
It also should be pointed out that Aouita won gold at the LA Olympics in the 5000 and then bronze 4 years later in Seoul at 800. I realize its not reaching from middle distance all the way to half marathons and marathons, but medaling in consecutive Olympics at 5000 and 800 is pretty amazing. Can you imagine anyone even trying that combo today, let alone medaling?
The question is "Could Bernard Lagat be the runner with the greatest range?"
Consider Ted Corbitt. Younger posters would benefit from learning about this Olympian (marathon, 1952) and co-founder of New York Road Runners and RRCA.
100yards- 10.4
100miles-13:33:06
Someone probably already posted this- Rod Dixon had an amazing range- track runner from 800-5000, took to the roads during the road racing boom era and was a sub 2:10 marathoner.
My bad- Someone posted. But it's a great discussion.
Fernando Mamede should be mentioned in this discussion
