Good run, but what happened in that last .1 ? :40 ???

It was onnthe track, right? So that's a nice strong finish.
Jewbacca, I would race because I'd be emotionally committed. That being said, don't worry about a dog crap outcome. I've had it it go both ways. Either way, you'll get a great workout.

Correct. On the track so those splits are 1600/1600/1600/200.

Deal if you post results! Give me a yuuuge goal. But you are way more fit than me!
Result: 16:51 (5:21, 5:25, 5:25, 40).
Your move.
Damn well 21 seconds faster than my PR. Soooooo yeah. Just now waking up at 10houes and 30 mins of sleep. Was out at 830. Was a long week.
AJ - Sorry...I was thinking it to be a road TT. Good finish in the last 200.
The sun is finally shining here. Will still be in the 30s for my long run, but sunshine is always a plus in winter.

No worries and thanks. The pain of those last laps - eyes rolled back, gasping for air - reminded me why I much prefer racing 26.2 miles over 3.1.
Have a nice run. Good luck staying warm.
5k is brutal. Marathon pain is indeed far less intense, although the frustration potential of the marathon is exponentially higher than with anything else in the sport.
Aborted the TT at 2miles. Legs felt great and I got off well. Just couldn't breathe. It's usually the opposite for me and my legs tie up while still breathing well. Guess not over that chest cold. Oh well still good workout. 5:32-5:46. At least second best mile time I have ever had.
AJ - Thanks...the long run went well. Ran my toughest, hilliest route. Stopped at 15.5 miles, but could have gone a little more. Needed to be somewhere. Family engagements have cut some of my runs short this week. No problem, though...still got in 53 miles.
Smoove- I am with you. If I never ran another 5k in my entire life that would be okay w me. They suck.
I never said they suck; just hat they are brutally painful.
Still, the 5000m is the true essence of distance racing in my worldview. If I could only race one distance for my entire life, it would be he 5000m. But it is absolutely brutal.
Allen1959 What is the matter with your knees? I'd suggest you do the exercises. I have been doing knee strengthening exercises a lot. Mine are actually improving. Most days they make god awful sounds on stairs but do not hurt as much. I think the exercises have had a positive impact.
angryjohnny awesome TT.
RRR I'd guess if you did a few 400 and 800 workouts you'd drop your mile time by a ton. Probably the same with your 5k time.
I've never been able to run a time trial. I tried doing one before the big turkey trot and in the race I was 50 seconds a mile faster. I guess the other racers motivate me to not run so embarrassingly slow.
I have never raced a mile. I assume I could run in the 5:10 range. I just don't have a lot of speed. And I just do not enjoy shorter races for sure.
If I could race one distance it would probably be half marathon. You can race it pretty frequently but still get in a groove pace was. I would say 10mile but it's rarely run anymore seems like.
Smoove I wasnt saying you meant they suck. I meant I was with you on they being brutal. The suck comment was my personal opinion but. Next summer I will prob be back running them.

Pappy, the symptoms are all consistent with "runner's knee," and a PT recently gave me a set of stretching and strengthening exercises to do twice a day. I've been neglecting those so far.
For six months I trained through the pain by reducing mileage and intensity, and taking ibuprofen to get through a few key workouts. Fitness waned, though, and I only managed a 3:07 marathon (3:00 had been looking possible).
Since then, three months off, and almost no pain relief, which is troubling. I keep meaning to start the prescribed exercises "tomorrow," but tomorrow has yet to come. Gotta do it, though. I will join the local YMCA after Christmas to have access to equipment, and to schedule dedicated time five days a week.
If symptoms persist, I suppose the next step would be an MRI to make sure there isn't more extensive damage. Any further insights? 45 years of running, and this is the first significant knee trouble, except briefly in the spring of 1974.
I've had knee issues off and on for ten years. Fortunately my cousin blew out his ACL and came over for a couple of weeks for rehab. I was whining to him about my knee pain and he so eloquently told me "your just a fat weakling now" Hate to say he was correct.
I just used YouTube to find some exercises. So far they have helped.
The good thing about weight is it is easy to lose!
Thanks, Pappy. We only recently have had unlimited data, so video resources like that are new to me (rural area with no cable, etc). Really helpful! The folks on the 50+ thread have offered some good advice, too. Just need to be patient, diligent and consistent. Season's greetings to you, and best wishes for a great new year of running and racing!

Thanks guys.
Wow and congrats on a big PR! I love seeing older guys do well. I will turn 49 just after the New Year.

Thanks pappy.
Allen - My ortho dignosed me with “runners knee” a few years ago. The pain was just below the knee cap. She told me to foam roll my IT band. I did and it worked like a charm. Apparently a tight IT band causes the knee cap to be cinched tight against the knee. If you can loosen up that rope the knee cap will float more freely and cause less pain. Maybe worth a shot.
