I knew I'd get flack for that. However, he's long been thought to have tremendous potential at the mile, because he was running mid 15 and 4:07 mile in high school with very little mileage and he was remarkably strong at negative splitting the 800m, which is usually an indicator of mile strength. This is a guy who ran 1:43.55 as a freshman and now he's opened up in December indoors on a 200m track with an 8 second drop in the mile, closing in 54, despite having no one with him the last lap. At least two 800m specialists ran the 1500m in sub 3:50 equivalents since 2000. Kaki ran 3:31 and DK ran 3:31.96, so sub 3:50 mile for an 800m specialist is not as crazy as it sounds. (of course, Cram and Coe and Webb and Aouita are among the 800m/1500m guys to go sub 3:30 or sub 3:50 mile and sub 1:44).
