Pretty sure Kiprop's 3:26 for 1500m is vastly superior to 3:46.9

Plus weren't they the first variants from the original yellows? (still have my last pair of yellows in the back of a closet)
No, the yellow Kennedys were the second release. The originals were white with a blue accent on the toe and yellow on the sides.

This segment of nottalotta's post is one of the most accurate, most on-target, and best stated things ever said on these boards about the career of Alan Webb. (And that covers a lot of ground.)
Interestingly, I heard Ovett talking during the world champs or some time this year, that the key to championship success in 800-1500m was the ability to change-up/accelerate in bursts.
Exactly. To put it more clearly. Racing is about being in the right position at the right time. Finding and keeping a good position. Making sure you cover all the right moves smartly. This requires the ability to accelerate quickly. And to make quick decisions DURING the race.
Now, I think Alan Webb could run it bursts, but he just did not seem to know how to get good position and he never seemed to react to the moves until it was too late. If you put Centro's tactical sense in Alan Webb's body (at his best), then someone who could not only win (or place really high) in fast, rabbited Diamond league events, but also like Centro, medal (or maybe even win) Olympic medals.
Instead Alan was good at 3 types of races: 1) rabbit races where it was just him or just a few other runners at his level. 2) Mano-a-mano wars, 3) where he was by far the best runner in the race and tactics did not really matter. He could just avoid being boxed and out kick, or simply run away in the middle of the race.
I agree that he should have run college a bit more, and he should have tried to run a lot of races where, really, he should win or place high, but he needed to run smart to do so. In short, he needed to practice racing to learn how to do it. And he needed to achieve some success doing it to build confidence in his ability to race - not just run face.
Hey Alan Webb, get a YouTube channel! You were hugely popular- more than you probably even realize. Guaranteed you will make a healthy income off videotaping your life. I too remember the days when any article on Webby would bring hundreds of comments. All the dormant fans will come back when we hear about your new ventures, whatever they may be.
