Top USA runner (female) wants "show of resilience" in NYC marathon

It should be kept in mind that NYC is one of the slower major marathon courses. There is a reason that despite consistently attracting top notch talent for half a century+, it rarely concedes winning times within 5min of a current standing world records. You don't run NYC for the time/world record attempt. You do it for the GLORY (and the $ doesn't hurt).

Side note: though not gusting, there was a considerable head wind on today's point to point course that can't be ignored (one that Keitany took for 20+ miles while Flanagan intelligently tucked in the pack).

Hats off to Flanagan who ran the perfect race to cap off a brilliant career.

I agree. Kiplagat was slower in 2010 (2:28) when Gebre was 2:08 on the male side.

2:26:53 just isn't that slow for NYC on the women's side. If Keitany and the other chick had been in better form maybe it would not be enough, but even for Flanagan personally it was fast.

Look at the LRC thread below. Everybody is "suddenly" chiming in to "congratulate" this victory. But no one did for Hasay? It just shows how they need an "echo chamber" effect to make this seem more real, and know the media will bite.

Why are many American pro-runners congratulating Shalane today, but none did so to Hasay last month?

Field was not so broad as with 2014 Boston. Only 2 (maybe 3) really needed the payout. Also no need for variable pacers, etc., as Keitany "took the wind" most of the way (obvious trick/excuse).

Problem is, betting is in USA, and hometown girls already have some favoritism anyway. On paper, she should have been at least 10:1, likely 20:1 (5% chance).

In other words, we here on LRC forums broke the story early, but the media grunts covered it up because it didn't fit their narrative.

Now the story is, that supposedly Keitany had an (unspecified) "problem" that kept her from winning and/or producing a better time than 2:28-whatever.

Next phase in the circus will be to call anyone who says something was amiss a "conspiracy theorist", and deride them for even pointing out the discrepancies.

Fortunately with something like Las Vegas there were "citizen reporters" who to this day are uncovering more than MSM, but I expect the running media to quite quickly close ranks over this "win" that makes the flag fly high.

New York marathon showcases city’s resilience after truck attack

Five days after the worst attack on New York since September 11, 2001, the city staged a show of defiance Sunday, with some 2.5 million people packing the streets to cheer on 50,000 marathon participants from around the world.

In a befitting finish, Shalane Flanagan, 36, became the first American in 40 years to win the women’s title, overcoming a slow start to capture her first major world marathon crown in an unofficial time of 2 hours 26 minutes 53 seconds.

She overcame that "slow start" because the Kenyans dogged it. Pure and simple.
