Realize I'm coming in really late to this discussion, but wanted to say how helpful it was as I was just diagnosed with strep yesterday and so finally able to be out of the house now that I've had antibiotics in my system for 24 hours. Have been looking to see how dangerous or not it was to train with strep and this has made me feel much less concerned than I might have otherwise. Just doing the elliptical today but I'll do full on speed work and a 10 mile or so long run tomorrow.
sidebar: several folks above commented on how to deal with a viral illness. I'm a huge believer, for instance, in the cold-eeze approach to viruses that someone above posted. There's clinical evidence that zinc ions do bind the virus's ability to reproduce and that's one of the reasons that cold-eeze works so well for folks. However, strep is a bacteria and doesn't behave the same way as viruses. Antibiotics are the only medications that will effectively address group a streptococci. addition, if left untreated strep infections can lead to rare but extremely serious complications such as rheumatic fever and kidney failure.
