Have you had your serotin feratin levels tested? If not get those tested. A normal reading for inactive people is anything higher than 12, but for serious runners, it should be at least 30. I experienced iron deficiency, it can take months to get your iron back up, if it is low enough. As to what kind of iron to take, I heard that the liquid form is best, but also, it is best if taken with vitamin C because it helps with the absorption, so maybe drink with a glass of orange juice. Do make sure though that the orange juice does not have calcium, because calcium will inhibit the absorption. Also it is good to find an iron supplement that also has a little bit of Zinc, I heard this will also help with absorption.
Its actually called "serum ferritin". I had low levels of SF, and it really hurt my indoor season after a strong fall of training. Another thing my coach has told me it to limit caffeine intake when taking iron as that can also inhibit absorbtion.
