My S has an interest in Haverford, Hopkins and Swarthmore cross country teams. He is interested in premed studies, particularly biomedical engineering. The three coaches seem very different in their styles.
Can anyone share their insiders personal experience with these three coaches (pros/cons) and what type of runner would do well with each of them? Also how much / little academics are supported by the coach in such a rigorous major?
Tom Donnelly is legendary, but Haverford doesn't have on campus engineering (and I hear realistically, the 4+1 program is difficult to schedule & get to with everything else) What's he / team atmosphere like day-to-day?
Pete Carroll seems good, the team seems less intense in their competitive outlook and supported academically. How close-knit is the team & how involved is the coach in mentoring individuals?
Bobby Van Allen I don't know much about in terms of his coaching style for the men's team, balance between academics & competition and personality (what type of runners he works best with). Are his runners happy, tight-knit, does he take an interest in each person or focus on the top guys, etc?
I'd appreciate especially current or recent grads experience. Thanks.
