for half m and marathon:
main screen: total distance - lap pace - current HR
2nd screen: total distance - total time - average pace
the 2nd screen I'd switch to at like every 5km marker, to see how far off my gps watch is from the actual distance covered, so that I can re-calculate the average pace needed as displayed on the watch.
I'm not sure if there's any watch that does the following: say you run a marathon, and you program it to press a certain button say every 5km manually (course markers). the watch then tells you the average pace you need to run for the remainder in order to reach a pre-specified time goal, taking into account also the fact that the watch will typically overestimate your pace (because you don't run the tangents perfectly). that would be super simple to program and might actually useful - not that I couldn't do the calculation myself, but some reassurement at kilometer 40 might be nice.

I set it to remind me to stop and take a GU when I do the 5K on Thanksgiving day
You all know that you can calculate distance by multiplying the number of laps you've run by 400m, right?
Usually just total time and lap time.
If I'm in a super low-key race that doesn't have regular or reliable mile markers, then I might use a projected finish time screen.
I usually just have current pace, distance, and heart rate.
With the HR and current pace I can decide how hard I can push at any given time. Overall pace/finishing time doesn't really matter because I can only push so hard, I'm going to push whether I'm ahead or below my goal.

I'm taking two GUs at this year's Thanksgiving 5K marathon.
I usually show:
Distance (in kilometers)
Distance (in miles)
Calories Burned
Distance to nearest Krispy Kreme
Current pace
Elapsed time
Average pace
Looking at HR during a race is foolish. If you've trained correctly, you'll know how hard you are running. HR is a post race/workout diagnostic tool.
Only have 2 visible fields on my watch..
Lap pace
Distance
I guess I would include time if I had more space but I only glance down once per mile as it is
Just the usuals. Time, pulse, O2 sat, BP, blood pH.

thanks, but my Garmin is too old to support ConnectIQ. so, to answer my own question, these things already exist, I would just have to upgrade my watch. well, I guess until my current watch breaks down I'll trust the computing power of my brain at km 40.
I change things a bit for races. I want everything I need on 1 screen, I don't want to have to hit any buttons, and I don't want to do any math. I like math, but in the later stages of a race, my ability to do simple arithmetic (or remember which button is the lap button) declines steeply.
So my race setup is:
Elapsed time (check at 10 miles/12 miles in a HM to see what I might need to do to hit a time goal)
Heart Rate (160 is fine, but I don't want to see 180 before mile 10 or so, and I don't want to see 150 at that point either, because it means I'm getting seriously fatigued)
Lap pace (with autolap = 1 mile), to keep me from doing stupid things in the first mile to first 30% of the race.
Running time, distance and average pace. I never found current pace to be reliable because it would change drastically depending if I was near a tall building, ender trees, etc.

These!
Is there any function that gives a 30s (or so) rolling average of pace? That could actually be a useful stat.
Is this a now a RW crowd? Leave the watch at home and hammer.
I dont never keep no metrics on my watch. Only MILES AND MINUTES!!!!!!!!
Pure hate and number of hammers dropped

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
