Its not fun to read about anymore. Its not fun to watch. I need fresh ideas to make it exciting again

Beer mile
Imagine zombies are chasing you
To purists there would be nothing better than for interest to fade. Go back to scratchy micro-niche sport with no money - just a small cadre of dedicated buddies living the dream together.
Don't be blue, you're moving up in the world. Running if for hobos. Cycling is the next level of peasantry.

Steeple through a ring of fire, or three.
You mentioned reading & watching the sport. What about YOUR running?
If you don't want to follow Galen Rupp or the Diamond League or NCAA running, simply don't worry about it. That simple.
If your running (i.e. your own physical health) is at risk, then there's a real conversation to be had here.
I coach a high school team & not a single kid could tell you a thing about the sport beyond running for their school. I can talk to them about all the aforementioned (Rupp, Diamond League, NCAA), but they don't care. They don't care about WHY we do the specific workouts either. But, they love running for each other, the pasta parties, & wearing a team uniform.
Put on your shoes. Go for a run. Feel your heart.
Mountain or trail running, take a few days off then light running for a couple weeks, try biking or swimming or even weight lifting, try training for a different distance
Do sprints to switch it up
